About the Role

This role supports the global sale and trading of iron ore by BHP, one of the world’s biggest suppliers of iron ore to the global seaborne market. You will work closely with commercial team managing the sale and trading of iron ore products (Iron Ore Sales and Marketing within BHP’s Commercial function), providing timely and practical advice to support their activities. Developing an in-depth understanding of the iron ore market and supply chain will be important for your success in the role.

You will also have the opportunity to contribute to, or lead, a variety of projects within the Marketing & Maritime Legal team and the wider BHP Legal function.


  • This role is responsible for advising Iron Ore Sales and Marketing on a wide range of matters and projects, including:Existing or proposed agreements for the sale, purchase, transportation and processing of iron ore.
    Existing or proposed joint venture agreements relating to the marketing or off-take of iron ore from mines co-owned by BHP and the transportation of these products from mine or port to customer.
    A variety of projects relevant to the marketing and trading of iron ore, including trading in derivatives and other price management tools and entering into trade financing arrangements.
    Disputes related to the sale, purchase, transportation and processing of iron ore (which may be led by Disputes Legal).
  • Participate in BHP’s internal risk assessments and advise on the management of potential future legal and other risks.
  • Support other parts of Legal, including the Corporate & Exploration Legal, Disputes Legal and Asset Legal teams, in relation to incidents, production issues and disputes, by providing business-specific legal advice.
  • Participate in and deliver projects and continuous improvement initiatives led by the Legal or broader External Affairs teams.
  • Deliver legal training to BHP’s Sales & Marketing team and contribute to the development and maintenance of training and guidance material.
  • Contribute to regular internal reporting in line with BHP’s governance frameworks.
  • Manage external legal advice and spend as required, including matter budgets and billing.
  • Travel internationally as required.

About You

As a successful candidate you will possess the following:

Experience and Qualifications

  • Demonstrated PQE experience in a highly regarded law firm or in-house legal team, and experience in the resources and traded commodities sector, including:advising on legal issues associated with the international sale, purchase and transport of commodities (ideally iron ore or another dry bulk commodity), and joint venture arrangements;
    drafting and negotiating commodity sale and purchase agreements, MoUs and other complex agreements; and
    having a basic understanding of key legal and regulatory frameworks relevant to international trade.
  • Law degree and currently admitted to practice in a major common law jurisdiction.

Skills and Competencies

  • Technical capability and judgment: Strong technical understanding of the relevant areas of law and the ability to deploy this to support business priorities and objectives in a timely manner, including by providing risk-weighted judgment and advice which considers the commercial context.
  • Communication: Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to synthesise complex information into concise, clear communications for a non-legal audience.
  • Prioritisation and execution of work: Able to manage multiple projects, meet competing deadlines and prioritise and reprioritise work effectively as new tasks arise or business objectives change.
  • Leadership: Confidence to speak up and challenge a proposed course of action where appropriate. Will take responsibility for and lead outcomes in their area of work.
  • Interpersonal: Strong interpersonal and stakeholder management skills. Enjoys working in a team and can engage effectively with a wide range of stakeholders with different backgrounds and objectives.
  • Individual qualities: Curious, motivated, independent problem-solver who thinks strategically, asks questions and drives continuous improvement.
