Claims Manager

Primarily, the job is solving day-to-day problems that occur in operating ships between ourselves and owners and/or charterers, and problems arising related to the operational activities of our own vessels which specifically means:

  • Giving in-house guidance on a wide variety of operational issues that may occur before, during, and after a voyage as well as any resulting voyage related commercial / FD&D claim matters, e.g. hire payments / deductions / off-hire disputes, hold failure issues, performance claims, early / late redelivery, charter cancellation, laytime & demurrage disputes etc.
  • Analysing, interpreting and explaining charterparty clauses, on both a practical level as well as from a legal perspective to the Operations departments worldwide.
  • Assessing the company’s position in various given situations regarding its claim exposure as well as recovery chances and providing an opinion as to how to handle a situation in the best way possible.
  • Debt collecting; pursuing of unpaid balances of hire and freight payments as well as handling demurrage and dispatch disputes and recoveries of same, including taking any necessary action to protect the company’s interests.
  • Giving advice on Bills of Lading, LOI’s and any other shipping documents and terms.
  • Managing voyage related commercial claims in close coordination with the legal department as may be necessary.
  • Negotiating claim settlements with our counterparts.
  • Main areas of contact being Operations, Chartering, Period Support and Marine Accounting Departments including Hire and Freight desk, including respective desks in all our satellite offices.

Requirements and Profile:

  • 2 to 5 years operations and/or claims experience. A law degree is not necessary.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • You like to take responsibility and have a dedication to details and avoiding / solving problems.
  • Flexibility and capability of handling and managing several cases on the spot.
  • Profound English writing skills are essential.
  • Ability to take ownership and responsibility for various administrative tasks within the department.
  • Good skills in Microsoft Office programs, e.g., Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.
