The Senior Orchestra Librarian manages the Orchestra Library Team which is responsible for the procurement, preparation, and upkeep of music materials – printed sheet music in both hard copies and digital files – required by the various musical groups of the Singapore Symphony Group (SSG). The position holder will also be required to maintain the database of all musical works that have been, or will be, performed by SSG, and to provide and update pertinent information on these works.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage the Library Team, including allocating manpower to work on concert projects and duties, and assessing the team in periodic performance reviews.
- Determine the yearly budget for the acquisition of music materials and process all related invoices.
- Procure music materials required for performances by purchase, hire or loan. This includes confirming with Artistic Director and/or Conductor the correct editions to be used.
- Prepare music materials by proofreading, editing, and marking scores and parts. This includes working with Conductors and Musicians to prepare materials according to specified requirements.
- Provide music materials for Musicians’ use with sufficient lead time before the first rehearsals, as well as scores for Conductors, Instructors, and external AV vendors.
- Manage the collection of musical works in the Library by cataloging and filing them properly. This includes checking the physical condition of the materials.
- Maintain the database of musical works in the Central Planning System (ArtsVision), by ensuring Work Titles, Instrumentations, Durations, Editions, and other relevant information are correct and up to date.
- Perform rehearsal and concert duties by ensuring correct set up of music materials (in folders) on stage before rehearsals and concerts, as well as proper strike of folders after certain rehearsals and concerts. This includes staying on during rehearsals and concerts to provide assistance to musicians as well as other admin colleagues.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum diploma holder with at least 5 years of experience working as an orchestra librarian
- Effective managerial skills with experience leading teams
- Knowledge of music theory and interest in classical music
- An eye for accuracy and attention to details
- Flexibility to work nights and weekends when needed
- Effective oral/written communication skills
- Proficiency in computer and computer software, e.g. Microsoft Office suite
- Proficiency in Sibelius or other music notation software will be an advantage
- Team player and ability to work well with a variety of personalities
