Ranked amongst the world’s top universities by QS, NTU has also been named the world’s top young university for the past seven years. The University’s main campus is frequently listed among the Top 15 most beautiful university campuses in the world and has 57 Green Mark-certified (equivalent to LEED-certified) buildings, of which 95% are certified Green Mark Platinum. Apart from its main campus, NTU also has a campus in Novena, Singapore’s healthcare district.
Under the NTU Smart Campus vision, the University harnesses the power of digital technology and tech-enabled solutions to support better learning and living experiences, the discovery of new knowledge, and the sustainability of resources.
School of Biological Sciences
Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
Assistant Professor in Tomography
The School of Biological Sciences (SBS),College of Science (CoS) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore, is actively seeking outstanding candidates to fill position of a tenure track position at the level of Assistant Professor level. The position specifically targets individuals with profound research expertise in cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) techniques. We invite applications from candidates who possess substantial experience in cryo-ET, particularly within the domain of in situ structural biology, and who have the capability to lead a research team, and/or a sophisticated technical platform, towards pioneering discoveries in the life sciences.
The ideal candidate shall possess a clearly articulated research vision and an outstanding track record of publications in premier journals. The successful candidate will establish and maintain an independent research group in SBS/NTU, dedicated to gain nanometer to near atomic scale insights into macromolecular complexes within their native cellular contexts. This will primarily involve the use of cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) techniques to explore fundamental biological questions. Furthermore, he or she is also expected to show a strong commitment to departmental undergraduate and graduate mentoring and teaching.
SBS covers several areas of research encompassing genetic, structural, biochemical, and cellular investigator-led projects, offering many opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations not only within the school but also with other schools in the university. Our school is equipped with cutting-edge infrastructure to support advanced research in cryo-EM/ET, including the Aquilos2 CryoFIB-SEM for sample preparation, a specialized light microscope designed for live microscopy and correlative light and electron microscopy (CorrSight), and the Titan Krios Cryo-EM equipped with a Falcon4i detector for high-resolution imaging. Additionally, the school boasts comprehensive biophysics facilities (such as BLI and ITC), a full suite of proteomics equipment, and a modern high-speed GPU cluster for computing work. The successful candidate will enjoy ample opportunities to access these state-of-the-art facilities and the vibrant research ecosystem on campus.
SBS and CoS seeks a diverse and inclusive workforce and is committed to equality of opportunity. We welcome applications from all and recruit on the basis of merit, regardless of age, race, gender, religion, marital status and family responsibilities, or disability.
Qualifications and requirements:
- The candidates should have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant field (structural biology, biophysics, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related discipline) with postdoctoral or other professional experiences in closely related research fields, preferably in in situ structural biology.
- The candidates should have demonstrated in-depth knowledge, training, and extensive hands-on experience in cryo-ET techniques, including, but not limited to, sample preparation, data acquisition, image processing, and sub-tomogram averaging.
- Competitive applicants for the Assistant Professor position should demonstrate significant research experience in cryo-ET with a strong track record of research productivity. In addition to this, the ideal candidate for the Associate or Full Professor position should have a track record of securing and overseeing extramurally funded grants, producing impactful research results, and engaging in innovative and collaborative research pursuits.
- In addition to developing internationally recognized research, excellent teaching ability is also expected of the successful candidate. The candidate is expected to teach both general and advanced undergraduate courses, as well as graduate courses in biology. Experience in mentoring graduate students and supervising research projects is highly valued.
- The candidates are expected to have adept collaboration and leadership capabilities (particularly critical for those being considered for Associate or Full Professor position), to be willing to work synergistically and establish collaboration with SBS colleagues, as well as to collaborate with other researchers within and outside the institution.
Emoluments
The candidate will be offered an attractive compensation package and will be supported by a generous start-up funds and laboratory space.
