Senior Counsel Projects and Investments, Asia Pacific

In this position you will be part of a dynamic and engaged global legal department and specifically supporting the business growth of APM Terminals (APMT) in the Asia-Pacific region. You will work closely with the Regional Leadership team of APMT and in particular its Regional Investments team, to provide legal support to the many investment projects APM Terminals is pursuing across the region. The position collaborates closely with the Area Legal Counsels in the region and will have a coordinating and leading role in respect of the Investments legal support in the region. The position reports to Maersk’s General Counsel Europe & APMT Asia based in The Netherlands.

The position will act as a legal business partner to internal stakeholders on a regional level, facilitate business growth with a can-do mindset, whilst protecting APM Terminals’ values, interests and reputation. With a high degree of independence and expected proactiveness, you will drive the legal support to projects and will ensure a pragmatic approach towards problem solving and risk management within the scope of your responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • In coordination with Area and country Legal Counsels and HQ legal teams, as well as other functions such as (predominantly) the Investments department but also Finance, Tax and Compliance, maintain a sustainable set-up for legal support in respect of (infrastructure) investment projects, which consist of M&A transactions, concessions tenders and extensions, joint venture projects, project finance and portfolio resolutions.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to business stakeholders (APM Terminals regional leadership and Regional Investments), collect and share feedback from business organisation on ways to improve processes, actively support and participate in development of legal tools allowing for better efficiency.
  • Provide advice and support on reviewing, drafting and negotiating contracts with partners, counterparties and governmental authorities.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of Maersk’s contract templates and policies in relation to risk, ensure understanding and promotion for the same among the teams and stakeholders;
  • Take responsibility for engaging and managing of external legal counsels, including legal budget;
  • Upon request, provide trainings to colleagues on relevant legal topics.

Who we are looking for

  • Master’s degree in law;
  • Minimum 8 years of relevant legal experience, ideally in an international law firm in combination with an in-house legal team for a multinational company, with strong experience in either international M&A or in an international infrastructure project environment;
  • Deep competence in drafting and negotiating complex contracts;
  • Have a good understanding of the basic financial aspects of investments;
  • Strong ethics, conducts all activities with honesty and integrity in line with company values and looks out for the best interest of the company;
  • Proven stakeholder management and influencing skills;
  • Ability to grasp, analyse and translate complex issues into a language suitable for non-legal audiences in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment;
  • Commercial mind-set, drive to deliver high quality results effectively and efficiently;
  • Highly skilled in written and spoken English. Other (Asian) languages are considered an advantage;
  • Flexible to adapt to changing priorities and comfortable working across cultures;
  • Travel 10-20% within the region
