Louis Dreyfus Company is a global merchandiser of commodities, a major asset owner and a global processor of agricultural goods. The Freight department is one of the major global dry bulk freight operators, shipping 55 million tons of cargoes per year, managing integrated activities of chartering, trading, and market analysis.
2024 Graduate Trainee Program (Freight Commercial Track):
This is an 18-month graduate program designed to equip you with foundational knowledge and professional skills in our Freight Department, with exposure to one of the major vessel operations and commercial activities. Through practical projects and mentoring from business leaders, you would gain deeper understanding of the business and develop competencies that are essential to furthering your career growth.
Depending on individual performance, you could expect to develop professionally in Freight trading / research after the program and beyond.
Knowledge acquisition and focus area:
1. Pricing of Freight and Rate Negotiation
- Communicates with internal traders and vessel owners/brokers to price freight needs
- Uses FFA and analyzes external price proposals to determine fair market prices.
- Negotiates freight rates and other Charter Party contractual terms under supervision.
2. Market Research
- Research information from the freight market through communication with brokers and owners to assist in accurately assessing freight levels and projecting freight levels.
- Provides information on grain and minor bulk flows as well as competitor and supplier activities to the global team as applicable.
3. Freight Contract Execution
- Works closely with Freight Operations to stay on top of the itineraries, stowplans, and voyage execution P&Ls.
- Ensures all documentary and administrative requirements are completed in timely manner.
- Evaluates and monitors contract performance to ensure compliance with contractual obligations and/or to identify the need for changes
- Consults the Senior Trader on unusual price strategy, policy, and operational issues.
- Adheres to the Corporate and/or Platform Risk, Credit, Compliance, and Ethics guidelines
Requirements:
- Recent graduates from all degree disciplines and with strong academic records are welcome to apply
- Strong problem solving and numerical/analytical skills
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and handle conditions of uncertainty
- Proficiency in data analysis and programming languages e.g., VBA, Python is a plus
- Prior internships in shipping/maritime/commodities industry are a plus
