Job Description

The successful candidate will work with L. Roman Carrasco on counterfactual analysis of community-based fisheries projects in Philippines and spatial modeling of possibilities to scale up projects under the project Quantifying the Mechanisms for Effective Community-Based Fisheries Management.


The main responsibilities of the position include:

• Coordinating secondary data collection and organization with project partners.
• Leading survey design in collaboration with all project partners.
• Providing support for survey implementation by local teams in the Philippines.
• Collating, cleaning and organising secondary and primary data, and associated materials, for analysis.
• Conducting the primary impact evaluation.
• Conducting the analysis of mechanisms to impact.
• Collaborating with UK partner on analysis of adoption of community-managed fisheries.
• Managing all logistics relating to project design and management,
• Ensuring all outputs are delivered on time.
• Coordinating monthly (or bi-monthly) meetings with all partners and maintaining positive relationships with all partners throughout.
• Producing 1-2 papers.

Qualifications

• PhD in Environmental Economics, or other Environmental Social Science field with a strong quantitative element.


Skills

• Expertise designing and implementing social science surveys and key informant interviews in local communities.
• Advanced econometric skills to conduct impact evaluation using counterfactual methods (e.g. matching, diff-in-diff).
• Expertise using structural question modelling and/or path analysis to quantify the mechanisms determining impact.
• Expertise in community-based natural resource management, particularly in coastal areas in SE Asia or Pacific Island Countries
• Proven ability to coordinate a multidisciplinary team of researchers and practitioners across geographic time zones.
• Ability to communicate well, conveying ideas and concepts clearly and effectively to different audiences.
• Excellent organisational and management skills


Experience

The SRF will have extensive experience working with conservation practitioners in international contexts, and coordinating co-production of research strategies and tools for deployment in the field. S/he will be comfortable managing multi-disciplinary research teams, and will have experience leading, motivating, developing and managing the performance of team members. Expertise with community-managed conservation, particularly around fisheries management in the tropical south, would be a plus.
