Research Assistant (Coral Reefs)

The Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) at Nanyang Technological University seeks a Research Assistant to support the collection and analysis of coral reef ecological datasets across Southeast and South Asia. The role involves assisting in marine research projects to improve our understanding of coral reefs and the impacts of human activities and climate change in the region.

Supervised by Asst Prof Kyle Morgan, the position involves regular fieldwork in Singapore and overseas, sometimes in remote and challenging conditions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct coral reef ecological field data collection using SCUBA, focusing on coral ecology and reef structure
  • Utilize water quality instruments to gather environmental data
  • Assist in lab-based aspects of the project
  • Process coral geological archives
  • Conduct post-fieldwork analysis of benthic reef communities (e.g., photoquadrat analysis)
  • Coordinate local and overseas research activities
  • Engage with international collaborators
  • Manage the procurement of equipment and services necessary for research activities
  • Develop and pursue personal research projects, if desired

Job Requirements:

  • BSc degree or higher in a relevant field
  • Demonstrable experience in tropical marine fieldwork, including SCUBA diving
  • PADI Rescue Diver certification is highly desirable
  • Proficiency in using water quality instruments
  • Lab-based research experience
  • Strong organizational and coordination skills
  • Effective communication skills
  • Willingness to participate in Singapore and overseas fieldwork
  • Knowledge of Indo-Pacific corals is essential
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
