Head of Portfolio Management, Asia and Middle East

Main Purpose of Job:


  • Responsible for the development and management of all portfolios offered by SJP AME Companies, in line with the Group’s Strategic Asset Allocation approach and Investment Management Approach, ensuring it provides a suitable and competitive investment offering for the Partnership and which meets client needs.
  • To lead the Asia Portfolio Management team, ensuring the right capabilities, processes and infrastructure are in place to deliver the strategies and performances, taking into account the interests of the AME companies’ key stakeholders.


Key Responsibilities of the Job:


  • To devise and construct AME investment offerings in line with the Group’s Strategic Asset Allocation approach and Investment Management Approach, ensuring it provides a suitable and competitive investment offering for the Partnership and which meets client needs.
  • Responsible for AME portfolio construction processes and portfolio changes in the Asia and local investment committees.
  • Ensuring that all AME portfolios and funds are constructed / selected following robust disciplined processes and back by vigorous levels of research.
  • Monitoring investment performance and risks across AME investment propositions to ensure that we meet our low tolerance for not meeting client expectations with our wealth management solutions.
  • Consider changes to market and product environment and assess implications for the Group asset allocation and house views, and assess requirements for extension of existing fund range and investment offering.
  • Oversight of communication with regards to portfolio updates and changes through client facing materials and advisor engagement.
  • Client Engagement – Participation in client meetings and client webinars/seminars as a promotor of the SJP investment proposition to clients and prospects.
  • Partner Engagement – Training of AME Partnership to develop their investment capabilities and knowledge, and maintain two-way engagement to develop and finetune AME’s investment offerings.
  • Work closely with the other teams in AME Investment division and across AME employee and partnership base.
  • Ensuring the smooth running of the IMA changes across Asia through the various working groups and departments.
  • Social Value –Integrating Environmental, Social and Governance considerations into the AME Investment Proposition, and insuring clients are treated fairly by all time in their investments in line with group business priorities.

Requirements of the Job:


People Management Responsibilities:

  • To lead the AME Portfolio Management team and encourage an environment to grow and develop inhouse expertise in portfolio construction.
  • Work closely with AME Investment colleagues to make sure the Asia investment division achieves its objective.
  • Work closely with Group stakeholders on the ongoing strategies of the AME investment portfolios.
  • Working closely with Partners to ensure that they have the right support and capabilities to grow their business and FUM in AME.

Job Knowledge:


  • Degree in Economics, Banking and Finance, Accounting, or other finance related field preferred
  • Strong understanding of investment portfolio construction in the context of long-term investment; comfortable with typical portfolio construction approaches and techniques.
  • Strong knowledge on investment products in Asia and Middle East
  • Strong understanding of the regulatory environment relating to wealth management in Hong Kong and/or Singapore and/or Dubai
  • Strong understanding of global financial markets and instruments within, and is able to communicate these succinctly and compellingly to Partners and clients
  • To understand the SJP Investment Management Approach and Discretionary Portfolio Services well and to be able to relate this distinctive process to Partners and clients
  • Excellent presentation and public speaking skills to relate the SJP Investment Management proposition and investment related messages to partners/clients.

SJP Business Expertise:

  • A strong understanding of the SJP Investment Management Approach and how this process helps the company, partners and client on generating a long-term sustainable relationship and FUM
  • A strong understanding of the AME market and how the company can develop to target this market and expand the local proposition
  • An overall understanding of the wealth management sector and how the SJP business strategy fits in to provide quality advisory services.

Problem Solving:

  • Strong analytical skills and able to carry out market / fund analyses for portfolio construction
  • Strong communications skills, able to give succinct explanation to Partners and clients
  • Ability to make decisions on portfolio changes to cater to differing needs from clients/partners or changes in market environment
  • After thorough analysis, develop the creativity & ability to formulate evidence-backed opinions and stories to help partners relate the information to their clients.
  • Identify gaps within the investment offering and help the wider senior management team to develop appropriate investment proposition for AME

Nature and Scope of Impact:

  • The role contributes strongly to the Funds Under Management in AME by providing the investment proposition for our clients.
  • At an organisational level, the role provides valuable inputs and support on AME proposition development, investment related & operational matters to staff, Partners and management teams.
  • The role involves being an ambassador of the AME offices to create a positive image to the firm to attract talents and to increase the confidence of clients to the company

Interpersonal Skills:

  • Leadership skills to develop the investment strategy team and make an autonomous research capacity emerging in AME.
  • Strong interpersonal skills required as the role will require close relationship with all departments which includes the Senior Management, UK and AME Investment Team, Marketing, Compliance and Client Services team.
  • Good communication skills and relationship with the Partners
  • Strong interpersonal, public speaking and presentation skills required as the role requires frequent client meetings and to deliver speeches during Investment workshops or seminars
  • Strong coaching skills to develop the team competencies and the Partners’ ability in client engagements

Special Requirements:


Able to travel across the St James’s Place AME and UK offices.
