Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for Research Fellow in the Department of Physiology, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. The lab aims to identify the cell-intrinsic mechanism and extracellular factors that hasten muscle function and mass during aging. Lab Website: https://medicine.nus.edu.sg/phys/lab/TsaiSY_Lab/Index.html

During the aging process, skeletal muscle experiences atrophy, yet cardiac muscle undergoes reactive hypertrophy in response to a continuous loss of myocytes in the heart. Our preliminary data suggests that impaired metabolic flexibility, the ability to adjust metabolism between lipids and carbohydrates in line with metabolic demand, might be the underlying mechanism causing muscle aging. The primary objective of the project for this role is to investigate the role of muscle lipid metabolism in maintaining the health of skeletal, cardiac, or both muscle tissues.

Appointments will be made on a 1-year contract basis, with extension.

Purpose of the post

We seek a detail-orientated and self-motivated research fellow to join our team.

Main duties and responsibilities

The research fellow will be expected to lead the design and implementation of studies to understand the role of metabolism changes in muscle aging.

Qualifications

The applicant should have a PhD or equivalent degree in medicine, molecular biology or related fields at the time of employment. At least one first authorship publication in peer-reviewed journals for further consideration.

Other requirements:

  • A minimum of three to four years of experience working with rodent models of muscle dystrophy or cardiovascular diseases.
  • Experience with mouse dissection and immunofluorescence staining in tissue.
  • Experience with cell culture, preferably with primary satellite cells / myoblasts would be an advantage.

Formal application: Please submit your application, indicating current/expected salary, supported by a detailed CV (including personal particulars, academic and employment history, complete list of publications/oral presentations and full contacts of 3 referees.
