Purpose of Job
A research engineer is needed to run large scale operations and hazardous experiments associated with ammonia and hydrogen. The work will involve setting-up and operating pilot-scale facilities to study the effectiveness of mitigation measures such as water curtains and barriers on the toxic dispersion, deflagration and detonation of ammonia and ammonia-hydrogen mixtures. The role will require the engineer to hazard assessments, develop safe work procedures and conduct experimental runs involving ammonia dispersions in a large flow chamber and ignitions of ammonia/hydrogen mixtures within a detonation tube. The data collected from these experiments will need to be compiled and analyzed together with CFD simulations of the corresponding flow chamber and detonation tube.
ISCE2 is looking for a highly self -driven, team-player and meticulous individual who has a strong ability to multi-task in operating large-scale equipment and data collection with good time and project management skills to deliver results under tight timelines. A good attitude towards safety and a strong interest in process safety is also expected.
Key Accountabilities
- Collect and review process engineering and safety information from literature and industry collaborators.
- Conduct/participate in hazard assessments (e.g. HAZOP, FMEA, Risk Assessments)
- Develop safe work procedures and carryout large-scale experiments involving hazardous chemicals e.g. ammonia and hydrogen.
- Work as a team with researchers from other institutes/collaborators to collect experimental data and analyse them.
- Procurement, commissioning, trouble shooting, operation and maintenance of experimental facility and ancillaries (e.g. scrubbers, abatement system)
- Presentation and sharing of knowledge regularly i.e. communicate effectively (written and orally) on project findings and status to internal and external stakeholders.
- Consult and engage stakeholders i.e. industry/academic collaborators within the project.
- Results documentation and writing for publications, patents, etc.
Job Requirements
- Bachelors In Engineering (preferably with Chemical Engineering or Applied Chemistry background). Other safety related fields will also be considered.
- Practical/industry experience with Process Safety, Fire/Explosion Hazard and Risk Assessment is advantageous.
- Ability to develop process flow diagrams (PFDs) and process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) together with familiarity using industry standard software (i.e. process modelling (e.g. ASPEN+) and process safety (e.g. PHAST/Safeti)) will be an advantage.
- Willingness to learn new skills, self-motivated, able to work under pressure/tight timelines with minimal supervision and with a general high sensitivity to safety.
