Duties & Responsibilities
Laboratory Preparation:
- Prepare laboratory equipment, chemicals, and materials required for experiments according to provided guidelines and lesson plans.
- Ensure the cleanliness and organization of laboratory spaces, including bench surfaces, glassware, and chemical storage areas.
- Set up and arrange experimental setups prior to classes, ensuring all necessary materials are readily available.
Equipment Maintenance and Calibration:
- Regularly inspect, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment such as balances, spectrophotometers, and pH meters to ensure optimal performance.
- Calibrate and troubleshoot equipment as needed, promptly reporting any malfunctions or issues to the appropriate personnel.
- Maintain an inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment, coordinating procurement and replacement as necessary.
Ensuring Safety Compliance in a laboratory class:
- Adhere strictly to safety protocols and guidelines in handling chemicals, equipment, and hazardous materials.
- Conduct regular safety checks of laboratory facilities, ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulations.
- Provide safety training and guidance to students on proper laboratory practices, including the use of personal protective equipment and emergency procedures.
Experiment Assistance (to teachers and students):
- Assist teachers in the demonstration and explanation of laboratory procedures, ensuring students understand experimental objectives and techniques.
- Supervise students during experiments, offering guidance and support to ensure proper technique and safety precautions are followed.
- Provide assistance in data collection, analysis, and interpretation, as well as preparation of laboratory reports and assignments.
Documentation and Record-keeping:
- Maintain accurate records of laboratory activities, including experiment protocols, chemical inventory, equipment maintenance logs, and safety inspections.
- Compile data and observations from experiments for review by teachers and educational staff, contributing to the assessment of student performance and progress.
Collaboration and Communication:
- Collaborate effectively with teachers, school staff and other laboratory staff to support the delivery of the science curriculum and achieve educational objectives.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with students, addressing questions, concerns, and providing guidance as needed.
- Participate in departmental meetings, workshops, and professional development activities to enhance skills and stay abreast of best practices in laboratory management and science education.
Requirements
- Diploma or Degree in Chemistry or a related field of study (e.g. Chemical Engineering, Applied Chemistry)
- Work experience in school or research laboratories, or related laboratory work
- Knowledge of Chemistry with hands-on experience (e.g. preparing standard solutions, handling chemicals, titrations, etc.)
- Knowledge in laboratory management with organisation skills
- Team player, who can work independently
- Able to work and communicate effectively with teaching staff and students is an advantage
