Research Fellow, Emerging Infectious Diseases

National University Of Singapore

National University Of Singapore company logo

The Signature Research Programme in Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) aims to pioneer the development and discovery of new and more effective methods for the treatment, prevention and control of new and emerging pathogens. The key outcome of the research will be the early identification of new pathogens, out of which new diagnostic tests, treatments and control strategies will be developed.

The Laboratory of Virus Evolution (LoVE) studies rapidly evolving respiratory RNA viruses including influenza, parainfluenza and coronaviruses. Our research aims to understand the molecular drivers of virus evolution and population dynamics, and their influence on virulence and pathogenicity. This position is for a full-time Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow with a strong background in computational biology and/or evolutionary biology. The position will contribute to on-going molecular epidemiology and phylodynamic studies of RNA viruses to model virus activity, evolutionary processes and transmission.

The candidate will play a critical role in conducting computational analyses to generate high-quality research data, and perform a variety of research under the PI’s supervision or his/her designate. The main duties and responsibilities include:

  • Conduct Bayesian phylogenetic and spatio-temporal epidemiological modeling, or using associated methodologies, to study infectious diseases.
  • Conceptualise, design, implement and troubleshoot research protocols.
  • Apply new procedures and develop new computational approaches and methods as appropriate.
  • Collect, prepare and analyse research data, and maintain computer database of research data.
  • Contribute to project design and group meetings.
  • Tabulate and display data for presentation in research conferences, for manuscript preparation and grant submission.
  • Use graphics and statistical software to analyse and present data.
  • Perform other duties incidental to the project theme.

Job Requirements

  • PhD in Evolutionary Biology, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or a related quantitative discipline with more than one year of relevant post-doctoral experience in a research environment.
  • Prior experience with influenza or SAR-CoV-2 is preferred.
  • Proven track record in the form of high impact publications.
  • Demonstrated capability of research independence progressively.
  • Possess strong writing and critical thinking skills, as well as good communications and presentation skills.
  • A team player who is able to prioritise, multi-task and work collaboratively in a diverse workforce.

We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
