General Manager

Role Summary: To have responsibility for the efficient operation of the fleet of ships to which he has been assigned and to work as a member of theUMMS Team operating as per Company procedures and best ship management practices whilst giving absolute regard to safety of life at sea and protection of the environment at all times. It is the employee’s responsibility to ensure Health and Safety is adhered to at all times.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of Senior Technical Superintendents and Technical Superintendents who will be responsible for the technical management of the vessels on a day-to-day basis.
  • Manage and exercise budgetary control for procurement of docking services, repair and maintenance, spares and stores on a fleet wide basis to ensure the approved budgets are not exceeded while maintaining the operational reliability to the highest standards.
  • Benchmarking vendors to ensure the services procured are cost competitive.
  • Proactiveness to improve the vessel performance, by setting up processes and ensuring compliance.
  • Implementation of identified projects to improve the vessel(s)efficiency and reliability.
  • Set up, review and monitor the KPI for the team as well as for the vessels in line with the company objectives. Carry out regular data analysis of costs, PMS and other KPI factors in order to ascertain health of the ship as far ship management is concerned.
  • Visiting the vessels (including in drydock) as and when required to monitor the vessel’s general condition, crew performance, safety, environmental protection, effectiveness of company ISM and procedures.
  • Arrange Pre-purchase inspections of vessels when required and analyze the reports with respect to vessel condition.
  • Provide leadership, mentor the team members and motivate them to meet the company’s requirement of operational efficiency and safety standards for the fleet.
  • Monitor the performance of 3rd party ship managers with respect to the owners vessels being managed by them;
  • Ability to maintain a cordial relationship including providing accurate information to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure company objectives are met while being cognizant of commercial implications emanating from technical decisions taken.

Undertake any other Technical related assignments as and when required assigned by Senior Management / Director.

Requirements:


Education & Knowledge

  • Certificate of Competency Class 1 and sailed as Chief Engineer for a minimum period of 2 years.
  • Good understanding of shore based activities and implications surrounding the role.
  • Ability to administer technical and budgetary requirements.
  • Well versed with regulatory framework and technological advancement in the industry.
  • Competency in harnessing the latest technology software to improve the vessel performance.

Working Experience

  • Must have sailing experience as Chief Engineer on Large Gas tankers and Ammonia tankers.
  • Minimum 3 yrs experience as Fleet Manager managing a team of technical superintendents and at least 15 years experience ashore in various technical and supervisory roles.
  • Experience to have worked with Japanese principals and preferably worked in Japan for some time.
  • Previous experince in leading a multinational team would be an advantage.
  • Prior expereince in dry-docking.
  • Candidate should have good knowledge of PMS and SMS system.
