Position Summary:
The analyst will be an integrated part of the Asian Palm Oil Economic research team which is responsible for all aspects of palm oil research including outlook, timely and relevant deliverables and forecasting of key supply and demand development for world prices. This market is fundamental in being able to assess global vegetable oil price evolution and to appropriately identify risk around vegetable oil positioning. In this role, the analyst will be focusing on the analysis of all data related to palm oil supply and demand to generate market insights and outlook, working closely with the veg oil commercial team locally.
Core Functions:
• In charge of keeping origins’ Palm oil SnD up to date and aligned with market conditions alongside the senior analyst. This includes compilation of all data available on supply & demand for the product, updating of SnDs in a timely manner, and forecast of each components reflecting current market conditions.
• Stay current on market trends and developments (price/policies/currencies, etc) that affect palm oil supply and/or demand. Develop a capacity to transform this information into market insights and adjust SnD outlook accordingly.
• Monitor palm oil flows / demand to Asian, African, and other non-major destinations. Coordinate with other Economic Research team members if any adjustments are needed for their specific products.
• Effectively communicate and synthesize weekly key palm oil supply and demand changes and flags to economic research teammates as well as commercial teams to help each stakeholder understand what changed and relevant swing factors. This includes the organization of a weekly market call and discussion with the Asian commercial and research team as well as a weekly Asian veg oil research call (to be organized conjointly with the senior research analyst).
• Contribute to improving current palm oil data analytics and processes, develop new internal knowledge and create new models and approaches where needed.
Skills/Experience Requirements:
• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in science / Economics / Engineering or any other related field. Masters’ degree in relevant field preferred.
• Minimum 1 year of experience in agricultural market economic research, preferably palm, including some working closely with commercial teams in designing trading opportunities and strategies.
• Excellent mastering of English both written and oral. Ability to speak Bahasa Melayu and Bahasa Indonesia is a plus.
• Able to join field surveys to collect field observations is also expected.
• Must be willing to work with coding language or learn (Python).
• Strong statistical and analytical skills, including understanding of data management and best practices when approaching data analytics.
• Good mastering of Excel, some level of expertise in using BI tools (Tableau) and/or programming language (Python) for analytics.
• Critical thinking: must be able to look at trends, data, and numbers to draw conclusions based on the findings and write reports.
• Detail oriented and organized for grid maintenance; vigilant in analysis to come to correct analysis/assumptions.
