RESPONSIBILITIES
- The role will lead in the development and execution of communications projects, initiatives and global media partnerships in support of SMU's engaged city university strategic thrust.
- In enhancing SMU's brand and reputation regionally through the University's overseas centres, the role will provide support through strategic communications and media publicity planning, and work with partners on the execution of plans.
- The role will develop compelling content that clearly conveys the meaningful impact SMU makes through its education, research and global engagement, with focus on its three strategic priorities to realise SMU Vision 2025 and beyond.
- In internal communications, the role will develop strategic plans, write and oversee the preparation of SMU President's communications to the University community.
- The role will oversee the creative conceptualising, planning and production of the University's annual report and corporate newsletter.
- Other duties include conducting research, developing, writing and editing a wide variety of materials including quotes, video scripts, speeches, talking points, background materials, narratives, opinion-editorial and thought leadership pieces.
- The role will be Principal Counsel on comms and media publicity matters to School of Accountancy and School of Social Sciences, and to Office of Partnerships and Engagement, Office of Industry Engagement, International Office, Office of Overseas Centres and its affiliate offices, SMU Libraries and Dato' Kho Hui Meng Career Centre.
- A bachelor's degree in journalism, English, literature, communications, creative writing, or a similar discipline.
- A master's degree is preferable.
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in a similar capacity, with at least 5 years of leadership experience in managing a team.
- Be adept with working with senior management and with various stakeholders across the organization.
- Keen interest in current affairs, and geopolitical and socio-economic issues and is also intellectually curious.
- Positive attitude with the ability to pivot quickly to changes.
- A good understanding of public speaking, aware of language subtleties and always crafts speeches as well as messages with the audience in mind.
- Excellent research skills and ability to work independently.
- Strong strategic, analytical thinking skills, with demonstrated excellence in creating, articulating and presenting ideas.
- Exceptional writing, editing and oral communications skills ability to produce compelling content for internal and external audiences to achieve desired results.
- Strong leadership and organisational skills with ability to successfully manage multiple assignments simultaneously and at speed while collaborating with multiple teams across the university.
- Experience in integrated communications, including knowledge of earned, paid, owned and shared media.
- Creative, state-of-the-art communications knowledge who understands emerging technologies, communication best practices, and has a passion for exploring new methods of communicating.
- Social media proficiency, along with familiarity with web-based communication.
- Ability to remain resilient and work well under pressure as this role must deliver high-quality communications under tight deadlines, with excellent attention to detail.
- Demonstrated leadership as well as teamwork and collaboration in a professional setting.
