The Second Officer is responsible for assisting the Chief Officer in managing the ship's navigation and safety operations. This role involves supervising the deck crew, ensuring compliance with maritime regulations, and maintaining the vessel’s navigational and safety equipment.
Job Description:
- Assist the Chief Officer in planning and executing the vessel’s navigation.
- Stand watch on the bridge as assigned, ensuring safe and efficient navigation of the vessel.
- Monitor and operate navigational equipment, including radar, GPS, and echo sounders.
- Prepare and maintain accurate navigational charts and records.
- Ensure all safety equipment and procedures are maintained and operational.
- Conduct regular safety drills and emergency response exercises.
- Participate in and oversee lifeboat and fire drills.
- Assist in deck maintenance and operational duties, including cargo operations and mooring.
- Supervise deck ratings and ensure adherence to safety and operational procedures.
- Conduct inspections of the deck and cargo holds, reporting any deficiencies or issues.
- Maintain logs and records of navigational activities, watchkeeping, and safety drills.
- Prepare reports on the vessel's operational status, incidents, and safety inspections.
- Ensure compliance with international maritime regulations and company policies.
- Communicate effectively with other officers, crew members, and shore-based personnel.
- Assist in coordinating with port authorities and agents during port calls.
- Stay updated with maritime regulations, navigation techniques, and safety practices.
- Participate in training programs and professional development as required.
Requirements:
- Relevant maritime qualifications (e.g., Certificate of Competency as a Second Officer).
- Previous experience in a similar role on board vessels is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of maritime navigation, safety procedures, and regulatory compliance. Proficiency with navigational and communication equipment.
- Valid STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping) certificates, including Basic Safety Training, Advanced Fire Fighting, and Medical First Aid.
