An Able Seaman is an experienced and skilled deck crew member responsible for a range of duties on a ship or maritime platform. ABs are essential for the smooth running of a ship, contributing to both daily operations and emergency situations.
Job Description:
- Assisting with the opera on and maintenance of deck equipment, such as winches, cranes, and hoists.
- Performing rou ne maintenance tasks on deck, such as pain ng, cleaning, and repairing equipment.
- Standing watch and assis ng with naviga on du es under the supervision of the officer on watch.
- Handling mooring lines and assis ng with docking and undocking procedures.
- Par cipa ng in safety drills and emergency response procedures to ensure the crew's preparedness for any poten al incidents.
- Following safety protocols and procedures to maintain a safe working environment on deck.
Requirements:
- A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) is typically required. Courses in mathematics, physics, and mechanical principles can be advantageous.
- While not always mandatory, having a technical diploma or attending a vocational training program in marine or mechanical engineering can provide a strong foundation and enhance job prospects.
- A valid medical certificate confirming fitness for duty at sea. This typically involves a comprehensive medical examination by a maritime medical practitioner.
