The Humanities and Social Studies Education (HSSE) Department at NIE/NTU combines the expertise of scholars and experienced education specialists in history, geography and social studies to deliver impactful research and teacher education programmes. We offer an extensive range of courses focused on both classroom pedagogy and disciplinary content relevant to history, geography, and social studies educators, curriculum specialists, undergraduate teaching scholars and higher degree students. HSSE scholarship in educational practice ─ as well as in the disciplines of history, geography, and social studies ─ is relevant to a range of 21st Century issues fundamental to the preparation of professionals interested in teaching careers, school leadership and educational specialisations. HSSE also has several collaborative projects focused on sustainability and disciplinary thinking that focus on innovations designed to lead practice and guide change in education.
HSSE invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in Social Studies Education, with an interest in Asia and comparative approaches, focusing on any of the following:
· Social Studies Pedagogy
· Citizenship Studies
· Multiculturalism
· Inquiry-Based Learning
This position will provide the suitable applicant with opportunity to conduct research in his / her area of specialization and teach social studies education. In addition, there will be unique opportunities to work with academic geographers, historians and educational research scientists and explore social studies education research in primary and secondary school contexts through collaborative research projects.
Requirements
Successful candidates must have:
- A doctorate in Social Studies, Social Studies Education, Education or a related field from an internationally acclaimed institution at the time of appointment
- Specialization in any of the following areas with an interest in Asia and in comparative approaches: social studies pedagogy, citizenship studies, multiculturalism, inquiry-based learning, or a related field
- A good track record in research, including publications with high-ranking journals and presses, or a promising trajectory in research and publication for early career scholars
- A good track record of teaching, preferably at both undergraduate and graduate levels
- Familiarity with the Singapore Social Studies curriculum and the Singapore education system would be highly advantageous
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and technology skills and dedication to academic teaching excellence and collegiality
Responsibilities
Successful candidates will be expected to:
- Teach Social Studies Education courses in HSSE’s initial teacher preparation and graduate programmes, including supervision of student teachers in their teaching practice in school and supervision of graduate research and coursework students
- Lead in conceptualization and implementation of strategies for professional development in Social Studies Education for in-service teachers in Singapore
- Develop a sustainable and productive research programme in the area of Social Studies Education including applying for grants and publishing in reputable journals or other outlets in the field of Social Studies Education
- Establish professional connections with local and international researchers and practitioners in Social Studies Education
- Share expertise with NIE colleagues through various platforms
- Assist in administrative work in the Department and in NIE
