Director of Engineering & Sustainability

Position Overview:

As part of the Executive Committee team at Royal Plaza on Scotts, the Director of Engineering and Sustainability will play a pivotal role in preserving and enhancing the legacy of our iconic hotel, which has proudly stood at the heart of Orchard for over 50 years. We are looking for an experienced, forward-thinking individual to lead our Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) standards and drive innovation through sustainable practices.

This role is ideal for someone with ability from both within and outside the hospitality industry, who can bring fresh perspectives to our operations.


Key Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Develop, implement, and oversee ESG policies by leading the integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategies into our hotel’s operations and decision-making processes, always ensuring alignment with sustainable principles.
  • Lead a variety of hotel projects, including infrastructure improvements, system upgrades, energy efficiency initiatives, preventive maintenance, and CAPEX planning. This includes negotiating and reviewing contracts to ensure that all projects are completed on time, within budget, and meet the highest quality and safety standards.
  • Provide leadership in safety and compliance by guiding the Fire Safety & Security team and leading the Workplace Safety & Health Committee to ensure compliance with safety regulations and standards.
  • Ensure all engineering practices and procedures fully comply with local regulations and standards.
  • Oversee the smooth operation of the Engineering Department, including routine, periodic, and preventive maintenance works. Direct daily engineering needs and plans to ensure efficiency and reliability.
  • Regularly inspect the building’s interior and exterior to assess conditions and monitor work progress, ensuring standards are met and maintenance issues are promptly addressed.
  • Ensure maintenance schedules and departmental requests are managed to optimizeguest satisfaction and operational efficiency.
  • Maintain required documentation for annual property audits, ensuring compliance with regulatory and safety standards.
  • Aid in the preparation of the annual departmental operating budget and financial plans, focusing on energy management, preventive maintenance, and capital planning to control expenses.
  • Provide guidance and training to the engineering team, fostering an environment of continuous learning and development.
  • Undertake added responsibilities as assigned by the owning company and General Manager, adapting to the evolving needs of the hotel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a leadership role within the hospitality industry or similar fields where facility management and guest satisfaction are paramount.
  • Familiarity with innovative engineering solutions, smart building technologies, and energy-efficient practices.
  • Experience working with older buildings, demonstrating a balance between modernizing infrastructure, and supporting operational excellence.

Key Skills and Requirements:

  • Strong knowledge of sustainability principles and ESG frameworks, with experience in conducting ESG assessments, data analysis, and developing ESG strategies aligned with industry standards.
  • Master’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Building Services Engineering or a related field is preferred. An advanced degree is a plus.
  • A Licensed Electrical Worker or Professional Engineer in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering and a Qualified Fire Safety Manager Certificate for commercial buildings are highly preferred. Candidates without these certifications must demonstrateextensive relevant experience and knowledge of local safety and compliance regulations.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in building construction, facilities management, or related engineering fields. Proven track record in leading large-scale renovation projects and managing CAPEX.
  • In-depth understanding of local regulations related to electrical installations, mechanical systems, fire safety, vertical transportation, and pool maintenance.
  • Experience in managing multiple projects simultaneously, with a focus on timely delivery and adherence to budget constraints.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, with strong problem-solving skills and the capability to make rational decisions under pressure.
  • Strong ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels, including team members, management, and external partners.
  • Ability to see the “big picture” and prioritize tasks to align with long-term strategic goals.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and extended shifts. Capable of physical tasks such as stooping, bending, and maneuvering around the property.
