Our client is a prominent global conglomerate with diverse investments and business operations spanning across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North Africa. The company operates in various sectors, including mobility, technology, energy, and infrastructure, with a focus on sustainability and innovation. The legal team provides comprehensive legal support across multiple business units, with a strong emphasis on corporate commercial law and data privacy.
The legal counsel position is for their green transportation and automotive business and the role can be based in Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. There is a separate budget for those based in each location.
Responsibilities
- Corporate Commercial Law: Provide legal advice and support on a wide range of corporate commercial matters, including contract drafting, negotiation, review, and risk management.
- Data Privacy Compliance: Advise on data privacy matters, ensuring compliance with global data protection laws, such as GDPR and KSA PDPL, and other relevant standards.
- Legal Research & Analysis: Conduct legal research on corporate and data privacy laws, regulations, and industry best practices to mitigate legal risks and ensure organizational compliance.
- Commercial Agreements: Review and negotiate various commercial agreements, including master service agreements, procurement agreements, technology licensing and implementation agreements, and distribution agreements.
- Market Expansion: Advise on new market entry and business setup in emerging markets.
- Legal Operations Support: Assist in improving the legal department’s efficiency by reviewing template contracts, guidelines, processes, workflows, and analyzing the use of legal technology.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with the Corporate Legal function and cross-functional teams, including senior management, business units, IT, Tax/Finance, and Compliance, to address legal and regulatory issues and support business objectives.
- External Counsel Management: Instruct and supervise external lawyers on specific legal matters and projects as needed.
Requirements
- Qualifications: A lawyer with ideally 5-8PQE, with a strong academic background in law and a recognized legal qualification from a reputable institution.
- Experience: Expertise in corporate commercial law and demonstrable knowledge of global data privacy laws and regulations. Experience in the automotive sector or a multinational corporation is highly regarded.
- Skills: Proficient in commercial contract drafting and negotiation, with meticulous attention to detail. Able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Independence & Motivation: Highly motivated, able to work independently under pressure, and take initiative in handling complex legal matters.
- Collaboration: A collaborative approach with team members and stakeholders, with strong interpersonal skills to manage relationships with business leaders.
- Language Skills: Proficiency in Mandarin is a plus, given the company's global operations.
- Work Arrangement: Hybrid work model with a preference for candidates based in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. The role is urgent, with interviews commencing immediately.
