An Autonomous Mobility Retrofit Engineer in Singapore is responsible for converting traditional vehicles into autonomous ones by integrating advanced hardware and software systems. This role involves applying expertise in vehicle mechanics, electronics, and automation to retrofit vehicles with autonomous driving capabilities. Here’s a typical job description for this role:

Job Title: Autonomous Mobility Retrofit Engineer

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Retrofit Design and Installation:Design and implement retrofitting solutions for existing vehicles to equip them with autonomous driving systems (e.g., sensors, cameras, LiDAR, radar, GPS).
    Develop custom hardware and software modifications to enable vehicle autonomy.
    Work closely with the engineering team to ensure seamless integration of autonomous systems into the vehicle's existing infrastructure.
  2. System Integration:Integrate autonomous driving technologies such as AI-based driving software, sensors, and control systems into the vehicle’s mechanical and electronic systems.
    Ensure that communication between the vehicle’s systems and newly installed autonomous components is efficient and reliable.
    Test the compatibility of autonomous systems with the vehicle’s original components, making necessary adjustments for optimal performance.
  3. Testing and Validation:Conduct extensive testing and calibration of retrofitted vehicles to validate autonomous functionalities such as obstacle detection, lane-keeping, and automatic braking.
    Analyze data from test drives to ensure that retrofitted vehicles meet performance and safety standards.
    Troubleshoot and resolve any issues that arise during the testing phase, working to fine-tune the integration of autonomous systems.
  4. Hardware and Software Upgrades:Continuously improve retrofitting designs by implementing the latest advancements in autonomous mobility technologies.
    Collaborate with software teams to upgrade the vehicle’s control systems, ensuring compatibility with new AI algorithms or sensor packages.
    Install hardware upgrades, such as higher-resolution cameras, advanced radar systems, or more powerful onboard computers.
  5. Project Management and Collaboration:Manage retrofitting projects from design to implementation, ensuring that timelines and budgets are adhered to.
    Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including mechanical engineers, software developers, and electronics specialists, to execute retrofitting projects.
    Liaise with external suppliers to procure necessary components and ensure that all parts meet safety and performance standards.
  6. Compliance and Safety:Ensure that retrofitted vehicles comply with Singapore’s road safety regulations and industry standards for autonomous vehicles.
    Conduct risk assessments and implement safety measures to ensure that retrofitted vehicles can operate safely in various environments.
    Ensure all retrofitting activities meet local transportation laws and international autonomous vehicle safety guidelines.
  7. Documentation and Reporting:Document the retrofitting process, including system diagrams, software configurations, and integration methodologies.
    Prepare detailed reports on testing results, system performance, and any modifications made during the retrofit process.
    Provide technical documentation and training materials for clients or other engineering teams involved in maintaining retrofitted vehicles.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Automotive Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in vehicle retrofitting, automotive systems, or autonomous vehicle development.
  • Knowledge of autonomous driving systems, including LiDAR, radar, camera-based systems, GPS, and AI-powered control systems.
  • Proficiency in vehicle electronics, CAN bus systems, and automotive software tools.
  • Hands-on experience with retrofitting or modifying vehicle hardware, including electrical and mechanical components.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot integration issues between vehicle systems and autonomous technologies.
