Associate Legal Director SEA

What you will do:
As Associate Legal Director SEA, you will be a senior member of the SEA Leadership Team and APAC Legal Team providing legal support, across all lines of business in the SEA region. You will serve both as a strategic advisor as well as a hands-on contracts attorney. The transactions, deals and matters that you work on will have significant strategic value to JCI.

You will serve as a strategic business partner to the SEA Leadership Team and be responsible for providing timely advice to business and sales leaders regarding contractual terms at the proposal, negotiation, and contract performance stages, including drafting, review, and negotiation of contracts. You will develop, deliver, and implement legal and compliance strategies, best practices, templates, tools, playbooks and associated policies, processes, and training.

You will be joining the APAC Legal Team, a group of energized, engaged, talented, experienced, and collaborative professionals dedicated to serving their clients and partnering with stakeholders across the enterprise.


How you will do it:

The person serving in this role will:

  • Serve as a strategic business partner to the SEA team responsible for driving sales, working directly with functional and regional leaders in the review, structuring, drafting, and negotiation of a wide variety of complex commercial transactions including: service and digital offerings; construction and technology integration contracts; and enterprise-wide framework agreements.
  • Ensure that the commercial transactions and procurement teams supporting your businesses are equipped to support the remainder of the contracts entered into by the business; drive the contract excellence initiatives.
  • Manage legal risks arising from regional operations and sales contracts, including identifying real risk and mitigating such risks, escalating consideration of such risks within the enterprise in accordance with establish policies and procedures, and driving alignment among legal professionals, sales professionals, and other business stakeholders concerning such risks.
  • Manage resolution of legal issues that arise in existing commercial relationships, including pre-litigation disputes and inquiries.
  • Develop, deliver and implement legal and compliance strategy, best practices, templates, tools, playbooks and associated policies, processes and training on a global basis.
  • Actively serve as a leader, positive role model, and mentor to colleagues and clients regarding legal counseling and business skills, and model Johnson Controls’ leadership behaviors.
  • Identify and sponsor enterprise-wide initiatives that advance the Company's legal function.
  • Stay current on emerging legal issues and develop solutions to mitigate associated risk and ensure compliance.
  • Advise project managers on post-contractual issues (including proper project documentation, progress claims, variation, delay and prolongation claims etc.) and where necessary, assist with the instructing and liaising with external counsel.
  • Support the Regional Compliance Director in the implementation of compliance policies, roll out training to the business, as well as advise on and support internal investigations as required.
  • Advise HR on legal issues arising from employment matters such as benefits and policies, restructuring, terminations, retirement, and re-employment.
  • Work with finance and the business collect outstanding debts and reduce receivables.
  • Support the Corporate Secretarial Manager.
  • Work with members of specialized global functional teams from time to time, such as the Corporate Development Office on M&A deals, restructures and divestitures, Intellectual Property, Labour & Employment, and Litigation.
  • Contribute to regional committee or project teams set up by the Law Department.
  • Be flexible in work scope and organizational changes to provide needed legal support to meet business needs, as required.

What we look for:

  • Law degree and qualified to practice in Singapore.
  • Substantial transactional experience at a large multinational publicly traded company or an international law firm, especially in construction, is preferred. Experience in one or more of the following areas will be preferred: Intellectual Property, Competition Law, Environmental Law, Project and Structured Financing, Cyber Security, Privacy and Data Protection.
  • Experience working and/or supporting deals/matters in other APAC countries outside of Singapore is preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 – 12 years of legal experience, with at least 8 of those including substantial transactional experience.
  • Excellent drafting and Strong leadership skills.
  • The successful candidate must possess a problem-solving, “can do” orientation with a demonstrated ability to simplify complex situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, be a self-starter and be proactive.
  • Familiarity with supporting and/or working within a matrixed environment on behalf of multiple and diverse business units.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with leadership, peers, and clients, with demonstrated ability to influence outcomes positively.
  • Must be a team player, with exceptional interpersonal skills, a sense of humor, unquestionable ethics and integrity, and sound judgment. Must work well laterally both with other attorneys and with clients.
  • Organized and hard-working, ability to maintain focus while managing complex projects simultaneously in a fast-paced work environment and manage people and tasks to deadline.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively, write clearly and concisely, translate legal implications of contract terms into identifiable business risks and make recommendations based on a considered risk-benefit analysis.
  • Fluent in English (both written and spoken). Candidates who are fluent in one or more Asian languages such as Bahasa Malay, Bahasa Indonesia, Thai or Mandarin will be added advantage.
