The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Assistant on a 12-month contract at the Office of Education Research, Centre for Research in Child Development.
Project Title: A study on early number acquisition
Project Introduction:
This project examines how children acquire meanings of numbers. We examine how children’s number knowledge is measured and ask what may be associated with the number word learning trajectory, exploring factors such as working memory, subitizing, and home numeracy environment.
Requirements:
- Bachelor of Arts / Science in Psychology, Education, Cognitive Science, Linguistics, or related fields
- Experience interacting with children and/or families
- Interpersonal skills working with different stakeholders and an interest in relationship building with stakeholders
- Strong organizational skills
- Keen attention to detail
- Enthusiasm about research in developmental science
- Strong, self-directed initiative and ability to take on challenges
- Experience conducting independent research (e.g., an honors thesis project, an independent study) is strongly preferred, but not required
Responsibilities:
- Conducting experiments with young children in preschools / childcare centres
- Contacting preschools / childcare centres to coordinate research
- Building relationships with stakeholders
- Stimuli design and creation
- Data collection, entry, coding, and analysis
- Assist with video coding of classroom talk and children’s behaviour
- Conducting literature reviews
- Public outreach of developmental science
- Other duties as assigned by PI
