Job Description – Embryologist
The Embryologist is responsible for the care and handling of all oocytes, embryos, and sperm within the laboratory. This role involves preparing gametes for insemination or injection, transferring and freezing oocytes, embryos, and sperm, while ensuring a safe environment for both fresh and frozen specimens.
Key Skills
Proficiency in IVF procedures, including:
- Cryopreservation and thawing of embryos
- Embryo culture and monitoring
- Grading and scoring of eggs and embryos
- Identification, selection, maturation, and fertilization of eggs
- Insemination (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
- Selection of embryos for transfer
- Sperm analysis and washing
- Teasing and identifying testicular spermatozoa from biopsies
- Professional demeanour and ability to collaborate effectively within a coordinated team
- High degree of personal discipline in the laboratory, demonstrating consistent reproducibility in work quality
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
Requirements:
- A degree in a relevant field of science from an accredited tertiary institution.
- Availability to work on Sundays and public holidays, as well as outside regular office hours when necessary.
- A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in laboratory settings is preferred.
Other Responsibilities:
- Perform tasks and processes according to Embryologist skill levels and abilities.
- Take responsibility for advanced aspects of laboratory operations and assist in training new staff as needed.
- When trained, demonstrate the maturity and responsibility to work with minimal supervision.
