Reports To: HSE Manager / Engineering Manager

Job Summary:

The Senior Process Safety Engineer will lead and manage process safety activities to ensure that all operational processes are compliant with local and international safety regulations. The role involves conducting risk assessments, hazard analyses, and safety studies to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of plant operations. The Senior Process Safety Engineer will also mentor junior engineers and collaborate closely with other departments to drive a culture of safety across the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Process Safety Management:
    • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Process Safety Management (PSM) systems.
    • Ensure compliance with local safety regulations (e.g., WSH Act, SS506, etc.) and international standards (e.g., OSHA PSM, API, IEC 61511).
    • Develop and maintain safety case reports, safety management systems, and other relevant documentation.
  • Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment:
    • Conduct and facilitate hazard identification (HAZID), hazard and operability (HAZOP), and other process hazard analyses (PHAs).
    • Perform quantitative risk assessments (QRAs), Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA), and Bow-Tie analysis.
    • Develop and review safety studies, such as Fire and Explosion Risk Analysis (FERA), Dust Explosion Risk Analysis (DERA), and Consequence Modeling.
  • Safety Integrity:
    • Ensure proper implementation of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) in accordance with IEC 61511.
    • Manage and verify the integrity of safety critical equipment and ensure regular maintenance and testing.
  • Incident Investigation:
    • Lead and participate in root cause analysis and incident investigations for process safety-related incidents.
    • Provide recommendations and corrective actions to prevent recurrence of incidents.
  • Safety Audits and Inspections:
    • Conduct process safety audits, both internal and external, and ensure all indings are closed out.
    • Perform regular inspections of facilities to ensure safety compliance.
  • Training and Development:
    • Mentor and guide junior process safety engineers and other team members in safety practices and procedures.
    • Develop and conduct process safety training programs for employees and contractors.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Work closely with operations, engineering, and maintenance teams to integrate safety into all aspects of plant operations.
    • Liaise with regulatory bodies and represent the company during safety audits and inspections.
    • Provide regular updates and reports to senior management on process safety performance and improvements.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or related field. A Master’s degree would be an advantage.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in process safety engineering, preferably in the oil and gas, chemical, or petrochemical industries.
    • Proven track record in leading safety initiatives and projects in a complex industrial environment.
  • Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of process safety regulations and standards, including OSHA PSM, API, IEC 61511.
    • Proficiency in process safety software tools (e.g., PHAST, PHA-Pro, BowTie XP).
    • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and lead cross-functional teams.
  • Certifications:
    • Certified Process Safety Professional (CPSP) or equivalent is an advantage.
    • Safety Training Certification (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH) is preferred.
