The Asian School of the Environment (ASE) at Nanyang Technological University is an interdisciplinary School that aims to be a world leader in environmental research focusing on environmental challenges in Asia. ASE integrates earth and environmental life science, ecology, engineering and technology, human ecology, humanities, and the social sciences to address key issues of the environment and sustainability.
The research laboratory on Resilient and Inclusive cities at ASE addresses important challenges related to rapid urbanization and climate change in Asia-Pacific. It focuses on understanding and modelling the benefits of nature-based solutions – e.g. urban parks or peri-urban forests, road trees, green roofs – in the region to inform policy and practice and create more resilient and inclusive cities. The program builds upon an interdisciplinary approach, combining geospatial modeling of urban environments and empirical studies of urban practice.
The laboratory is currently looking for a Research Associate to lead research on scenario exploration and modelling of nature-based solutions for Southeast Asian rapidly growing cities.
The project will be conducted in at least one case study in Indonesia and may involve extending current research to other geographies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with the projects by applying and refining a scenario generation framework for co-designing nature-positive urban futures, and estimating the benefits of nature-based solutions for a subset of nature-positive urban scenarios
- Contribute to ongoing projects investigating the quantity and quality of green spaces in Southeast Asian rapidly growing cities
Job Requirements:
- Master degree in Environmental Sciences, Landscape & urban planning or equivalent field
- Experience in participatory processes or co-design approaches in urban or regional planning
- Experience or strong interest in nature-based solutions in urban environments
- Good command of GIS software and geospatial modelling software (e.g., R, InVEST)
- Strong record of publications (commensurate with research experience)
- Work experience in Southeast Asia is preferred
- Experience with participatory approaches or scenario visioning, and strong geospatial analysis skills
We regret to inform that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
