Teacher of Middle School Music

UWCSEA is looking for an experienced Teacher of Music in Middle School to join its Dover Campus in August 2025.

The successful candidate will be responsible to the Head of Music for teaching general Music classes in Grades 6, 7 and 8 (ages 11-14). The ability to lead ensembles is desirable. The Middle School music curriculum covers a wide range of musical styles and is delivered in units covering exploring, creating and presenting music. The successful candidate may also teach individual instrumental or vocal lessons within the Instrumental Teaching Programme (ITP) as part of their timetable.

In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to be fully involved in the Campus’ Music Activities Programme. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the Middle School Music team and within the Middle School as a whole which has a strong pastoral ethos. An important part of the role is to be a Middle School Advisor (or home room teacher) which includes accompanying the Advisory Group on their annual Outdoor Education expedition.

The Music Department at UWCSEA Dover is an energetic and vibrant learning environment that encourages all students to participate and excel in music. The successful applicant will work in a team of 10 experienced music teachers, and alongside over 40 visiting instrumental teachers. The Music Department produces highly successful concert performances and productions, as well as excellent examination results, both in academic music and in practical music exams. Music is taught to all students from K1 to Grade 8. In Grades 9 and 10 students can elect to study UWCSEA Music, and in Grades 11 and 12 the IB Diploma. Our outstanding facilities include a Recording Studio, Recital Room, eight Music classrooms, 24 practice rooms, a meeting room and an ITP teachers’ lounge. The Music Department is supported by a full-time administrator and a sound technician.

Main Responsibilities

  • Teachers should contribute positively to the collaborative culture of the Music Department and broader Middle School team (ages 11-14 years old).
  • Teachers should work collaboratively with the Music team to plan lessons and further develop the curriculum.
  • Teachers should be actively involved in the wide and varied Music Activities Programme on offer.
  • Teachers should work collaboratively to assist students in sharing their learning through performances and productions.
  • Teachers should work with a high degree of flexibility and be positive towards taking on a variety of roles and responsibilities across age groups in a complex and dynamic department.
  • Teachers should be willing to teach a variety of musical styles and cultures.
  • Teachers should construct learning experiences that challenge students, support the diversity of learners in each classroom and demonstrate a strong commitment to concept-based teaching and learning.
  • Teachers should utilise the UWCSEA Learning Principles as a foundation for effective teaching and learning.
  • Teachers should ensure assessments support ongoing learning and provide timely, relevant and appropriate feedback to students on formative and summative assessments.
  • Teachers should demonstrate effective classroom management that shows an understanding of the academic, social and emotional dimensions of learning.
  • Teachers should keep parents informed about the learning of their children, and be proactive in communication with parents.

Expectations and Standards

Person Specifications

  • A degree and teaching qualification is a pre-requisite.
  • The ability to engage with students and to engender enthusiasm for learning is a pre-requisite for teaching at UWCSEA.
  • Applicants should have a passion for working with young adolescents and understand the unique developmental needs of 11–14 year olds.
  • Teachers should be willing and eager to participate in the five key elements of a UWCSEA education: Academics; Activities; Outdoor Education; Personal and Social Education and Service.
  • Academic expectations include enthusiastic participation in Professional Learning.
  • Pastoral expectations include the leadership of a mentor group, unless the teacher is exempted due to other responsibilities.
  • On average the College expects a yearly contribution of two sessions per week in each season to Activities and/or Service.
  • The College expects that teachers will participate enthusiastically in the curricular Outdoor Education experiences which are relevant to their students and will also occasionally volunteer for holiday Outdoor Education trips and/or Service Trips.
