Research Fellow

Singapore University Of Technology And Design

The Net Zero Futures Lab (NZFL) at SUTD Design Z Centre is seeking a full-time post-doctoral Research Fellows.
The successful candidate will be involved in a research project developing machine-learning assisted walkability assessment for pedestrian-friendly and car-lite neighbourhoods, under supervision of Asst. Professor Peter Ortner and Deputy President, Professor Tai Lee Siang. A background in computational design, architecture, or urban design is required. Demonstrated experience with machine learning applications to urban data sets is encouraged.

About us

NZFL is an interdisciplinary research group working on disruptive innovations for a Net Zero built environment. Our research leadership bring expertise from urban design, interaction design, computer science, and product development, together to conduct interdisciplinary research and develop new products, including negative carbon solutions.

About the position

This position is ideal for someone who is excited about computational urban design and sustainability research and looking to advance cutting edge research with new tools and exciting applications to real-world sites in collaboration with industry and public agencies.

Responsibilities/expectations will include:

  • Urban dataset collection and preparation
  • Generative modelling of urban networks and sites using NZFL software tools, further development of software tools (python, rhino grasshopper)
  • Training of predictive and deep learning models (PyTorch)
  • Support principal investigators in writing technical papers and project reports.
  • Contribute to exceptional design proposals for real-world sites in Singapore
  • Communicate research with public and private stakeholders and collaborators.
  • Work with principal investigators to craft research proposals.

Duration

This is a contract position. The initial term of appointment will be 1 year, extensible for a second year upon satisfactory performance and with further extensions dependent on funding availability.

Required/Desired Skills and Qualifications:

  • Desired: PhD in architecture, urban design, computational urban analysis. Exceptional applicants with Master’s degree may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Proficient with Python or R.
  • Experienced in computational architecture design with demonstrated prior research work with urban network analysis (space syntax, UNA or similar) and/or quantitative assessment of pedestrian experience.
  • Visual design or planning skills, including ability to contribute to master planning documentation.
  • Experience with machine learning or deep learning tools, and keen interest to advance these applications to design of sustainable urban spaces.
