Job Purpose

The Department of Geography at the National University of Singapore, recognized as one of the world's leading Geography departments, is seeking a dedicated and skilled Laboratory and Field Technician.

The person appointed will provide support for technical work carried out by faculty, research staff and students in the Department in both the laboratory and the field. Field-based activities may include work overseas, including on the Department’s overseas-based field courses at undergraduate and graduate levels. In the laboratory, the appointee will provide technical support for the Department’s analytical equipment, including the operation and maintenance of an Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (IRMS) and FT-IR Microscope and Spectrum 3 spectrometer, in our recently renovated geochemical lab.

The successful candidate will be instrumental in contributing to the advancement of knowledge within the fields of geochemistry, environmental sciences and physical geography, working at the forefront of geographical research and education. Job Description

  • Operate and maintain equipment in the Department’s GeoLab facilities, including an Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (IRMS) and FT-IR Microscope and Spectrum 3 spectrometer.
  • Perform sample preparation, data analysis, quality control, and troubleshooting tasks relating to equipment located in the GeoLab.
  • Support students and researchers in their use of departmental equipment, both in the laboratory and in the field.
  • Conduct training for new users and students in the safe operation of laboratory and field equipment.
  • Ensure that laboratory and field equipment is kept well-maintained.
  • Manage budgeting and procurement issues relating to the IRMS, FT-IR and spectrometer and other sophisticated pieces of analytical equipment in the GeoLab.
  • Ensure compliance with departmental safety standards.
  • Assist with the deployment of field equipment used in teaching and research, both in Singapore and, on occasion, overseas.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in geochemistry, environmental sciences, chemistry, physical geography or a related field.
  • An ability to work to a high level of accuracy and attention to detail, and possessing well-developed problem-solving skills
  • An ability to work safely and follow laboratory and fieldwork protocols and standards.
  • A good command of written and spoken English.
  • A willingness to work independently and as part of a team.

The following are desirable qualities of a successful applicant

  • At least two years of experience working with an IRMS or a similar mass spectrometer.
  • Ability to interpret and report the results of isotope measurements, including quality control and data validation
  • A strong background in analytical chemistry and isotope geochemistry, including the principles and applications of bio/environmental geochemistry
  • Enjoy being in the outdoors, exploring nature, and engaging in various outdoor activities
