About the Role
The Business Times Visual team is looking for an experienced Digital Graphics Designer to join our newsroom. You will work with journalists, developers, designers, and editors to create original digital content for our readers, enhancing our brand of storytelling.
Many business stories are accompanied by data. You will need to think about how to present data in a way that is accessible, clear and enhances the value and utility of the news content. There will also be opportunities to work on features and enterprise stories that require you to suggest visual assets that elevate the journalism.
The ideal candidate must possess the craft of designing digital experiences and should have an appreciation of business news.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Collaborate with journalists and developers to understand requirements and translate them into visual designs that accurately represent the underlying data, editorial angle, or product request.
- Assist in designing, illustrating, and prototyping data visualisation, visual stories, and social media assets using various tools and technologies.
- Use various statistics and data science tools for data parsing, scraping and wrangling
- Collaborate with the UX team to ensure that interactive graphics are user-friendly, responsive, and accessible across various devices.
- Help document the design process, including any issues or challenges encountered during the design stages.
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies to continually improve and innovate our interactive content.
- Conduct research alongside writers to seek relevant information, including conducting interviews and finding/verifying data sources.
- Manage workflow and process for data-driven stories in the newsroom
- Thoroughly test and troubleshoot interactive graphics to ensure functionality and performance standards are met.
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies to continually improve and innovate our interactive content.
Job Requirements
- Demonstrated track record in delivering appealing and useful data visualisation or digital storytelling projects.
- Strong communicator with the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional environment
- Proficiency in Figma, Adobe CC (Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects), HTML, CSS and JavaScript (d3.js, WebGL and Svelte are a plus).
- Proficiency in industry-standard 3D modelling and rendering software and familiarity with 2D illustration.
- Proficiency with data visualisation and interactive web design platforms like Flourish or Datawrapper.
- Proficiency in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS), spatial analysis tools, and data visualisation platforms are a plus.
- Excellent creative and artistic abilities.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Familiarity with the news industry and an interest in current events.
- Ability to multitask and meet deadlines.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality, accurate work.
- At least three years’ experience working in a fast-paced environment
