Research Fellow (eDNA in Biofilms)

The Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering (SCELSE) is a unique interdisciplinary Research Centre of Excellence (RCE), funded by National Research Foundation, Ministry of Education, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and National University of Singapore (NUS). Hosted by NTU in partnership with NUS, SCELSE is linking new insights from the life sciences with expertise from emerging technologies in engineering and natural sciences to understand, harness and control microbial biofilm communities.

We are looking for a Research Fellow who will be responsible for performing laboratory research to explore various aspects of how eDNA is produced and utilised in biofilms. The selected candidate will work independently or in a small team to plan and perform experiments to address specific scientific questions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with general laboratory management tasks to support the research group
  • Assist with planning, performing and documenting laboratory experiments using methods such as in vitro biofilm models, advanced microscopy, genomics and molecular microbiology.
  • Work closely with the Principal Investigator to analyse and interpret data, as well as troubleshoot experiment
  • Assist with supervision of staff and students
  • Participate in group meetings and prepare project updates.

Job Requirements:

  • PhD in biology, biomedicine, microbiology or a related field
  • Experience in microbiology techniques is essential
  • Experience in molecular biology is desirable but not essential
  • Experience in advanced microscopy techniques is desirable but not essential
  • Experience in biofilm models is desirable but not essential
  • Ability to design, plan, and execute experiments under supervision or independently
  • Detail-oriented and capable of maintaining accurate records of experiments and results
  • Be flexible and open to last-minute changes and variations
  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills are essential for research work
