Storage Engineer

The Storage Engineer is responsible for the administration, monitoring, and troubleshooting of Storage Area Network (SAN) and backup systems in a 24x7 enterprise environment. This role covers both level 1 and level 2 support for storage-related issues and requires certification and experience with a range of storage and backup technologies. Key technologies include IBM, EMC, NETAPP, Hitachi, Cisco SAN switches, and enterprise backup solutions. The Storage Engineer will ensure seamless operation, maintain system integrity, and support disaster recovery activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Storage Administration & Support: Provide installation, configuration, and ongoing administration support for SAN and enterprise backup systems to maintain operational efficiency.
  2. Monitoring & Health Checks: Perform regular health checks and monitor storage devices, ensuring early identification and resolution of potential issues.
  3. System Integration: Integrate storage hardware and software into the operating environment, ensuring compatibility and optimal functionality.
  4. Firmware Updates & Documentation: Conduct firmware updates on storage devices and maintain comprehensive documentation for all configurations and processes.
  5. Testing & Validation: Develop and coordinate test plans with customers to verify the full functionality of storage and backup solutions in live environments.
  6. Backup Administration: Manage Symantec and other backup environments, including job configuration, scheduling, performance tuning, and troubleshooting of backup-related issues.
  7. Disaster Recovery: Execute disaster recovery (DR) protocols for critical systems, ensuring successful restoration of production or DR servers when needed.
  8. Storage Subsystem Management: Oversee multiple storage subsystems, including tasks like disk partitioning, LUN assignments, and capacity planning.
  9. Zoning & Access Control: Create and manage zones, handle switch-related issues, and define security configurations within the torage subsystems.
  10. Capacity Planning & Performance Tuning: Conduct capacity planning, monitor utilization, and tune performance for both storage and backup systems.
  11. Data Center Operations: Support data center operations, including power cycling of storage devices, SAN switch upgrades, and participation in DR exercises.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Education: Diploma or Degree in IT, Information Systems, Computer Science, Business IT, or equivalent.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 3 years in enterprise backup solutions and SAN environments.
    • Hands-on experience with power cycling, SAN switch upgrades, and storage replication.
    • Exposure to data center shutdown activities and disaster recovery exercises.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency with IBM V3700/V7000, EMC Unity/VNX, NETAPP, HP Nimble, Hitachi, EMC Isilon, and Cisco/Brocade SAN switches.
    • Experience with enterprise backup tools like NETBACKUP, Veeam, and IBM tape libraries.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently.
    • Effective communication skills and customer service orientation.
    • Demonstrated leadership and team collaboration capabilities.
  • Preferred Experience: Previous work with government sector clients is advantageous.
