Pro Bono SG, a registered charity and company limited by guarantee with IPC status administers the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme (“CLAS”), an access to justice initiative that ensures the needy and disempowered receive quality pro bono representation and advice in non-capital criminal cases.

Pro Bono SG is hiring for the CLAS Fellowship 2024/2025. The Fellowship is a one- year position (with the possibility of extension) that allows lawyers with 0-3 years PQE the unparalleled and exciting opportunity of working full-time on non-capital criminal cases to assist the needy and impecunious among us.

Fellows are exposed to oral and written advocacy at the State and Supreme Courts in their tenure, affording them exceptional opportunities to hone their criminal advocacy skills at an early stage in their careers.

Apart from criminal representation, CLAS Fellows are also involved in conducting interviews to assist in determining and making recommendations on whether aid ought to be extended to deserving accused persons.

CLAS Fellows receive guidance and professional mentorship under the CLAS Advocates during their tenure. Fellows will also receive free ongoing CPD training throughout the year as well as access to other senior members of the criminal bar for guidance and support.

An annualized salary package will be offered to the right candidates.

Applications are also open to newly qualified lawyers with a strong track record of pro bono work.

If applicants are currently employed, they will need to arrange a sabbatical from their current position or resign in time to commence work immediately.

Requirements

  • Called to the Singapore bar
  • 0-3 years PQE
  • Some criminal law or pro bono experience preferred
  • A demonstrated passion for pro bono work
  • Ability to manage a large workload
  • Self-motivated, resourceful and good team player
  • Ability to multi-task, work independently and within tight deadlines
  • Strong interest in oral advocacy
  • Fluency in a second language
