Full Time Faculty, Assistant Professor (Education Track) Position in Sociology, School of Social Sciences (SOSS)

Established in 2007, the SMU School of Social Sciences (SOSS) provides high quality undergraduate and graduate education expanding SMU’s pedagogical strategy to the study of society, government, and individuals embedded within an increasingly complex world. With faculty expertise and research spanning the disciplines of psychology, political science, sociology, and philosophy, SOSS’s research covers key thematic areas such as international development, policy and politics, Southeast Asian studies, social movements, and sustainability. It currently has a PhD programme in Psychology and a professional Master’s in Sustainability, with plans to expand its taught postgraduate offerings into other disciplines as part of its growth plan. The School aspires to make a significant and lasting contribution across sectors through its interdisciplinary approach to the study of social issues.

Position

The School of Social Sciences (SOSS) invites applications for an Assistant Professor (Education Track) position in Sociology to begin in July 2025. The candidate is expected to teach undergraduate courses across several major areas of sociology.

We seek candidates with a demonstrated record of excellent teaching in undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses in sociology. We are especially seeking a candidate able to teach an outstanding introductory undergraduate course in Sociology. Additionally, we would value the ability to contribute courses on Southeast Asia, Singaporean society, sustainability, community development, and Asian identities. Candidates should also have an established or developing track record of excellent research.

Singapore Management University is committed to an interdisciplinary and integrated curriculum, providing opportunities to work with faculty across the social sciences. The research support is excellent, and salary and benefits are competitive. The standard teaching load is six units per year and undergraduate classes are capped at no more than 45 students.

Candidate Criteria

Applicants must have:

· Evidence of excellence and innovation in teaching delivery.

· Teaching experience in a variety of core and specialised sociology courses, at the undergraduate and/or post-graduate levels.

· Excellent communication skills.

· The ability to work in a team with colleagues across a variety of social science disciplines.

· An established or developing track record of excellent research in sociology.

3. Research Statement (1-2 pages)

4. Teaching Statement (1-2 pages)

5. Writing samples (maximum 3)

6. Evidence of teaching effectiveness (e.g., teaching evaluations or syllabi)

Only shortlisted candidates will be notified for interviews. Interviews and campus visits will be conducted in December 2024. All hires are contingent upon the successful completion of a background check.
