A Process Engineer specializing in powder coating oversees and optimizes the powder coating process, ensuring high-quality finishes and efficient, cost-effective production.
Work Location: Woodlands
Working hours: 830 - 530 (Mon to Fri)
Job Responsiblities
1. Process Design and Optimization Design and develop powder coating processes to improve efficiency, product quality, and cost-effectiveness. Optimize powder coating application parameters (e.g., thickness, adhesion, curing time) to ensure consistent, high-quality finishes. Implement best practices for color changes, coating uniformity, and waste reduction.
2. Quality Control and Compliance Set up quality control checks to monitor coating thickness, gloss levels, and durability. Conduct root cause analysis for defects such as orange peel, uneven coating, and contamination, implementing corrective actions. Ensure processes adhere to relevant standards (e.g., ASTM, ISO) and industry regulations on environmental safety and emissions.
3. Equipment Management and Maintenance Oversee the maintenance, calibration, and performance of powder coating equipment, such as spray guns, curing ovens, and booths. Work with vendors and maintenance teams to source and maintain equipment and ensure minimal downtime. Ensure that equipment settings are correctly adjusted for different product specifications and powder types.
4. Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving Diagnose and resolve issues such as coating defects, equipment malfunctions, or process inefficiencies. Develop contingency plans to minimize production disruptions. Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., quality assurance, production, and maintenance) to address and resolve coating-related issues.
5. Process Documentation and Reporting Maintain detailed documentation of the powder coating processes, parameters, and changes. Create reports on process efficiency, quality metrics, and improvement initiatives. Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) for powder coating applications and updates.
6. Continuous Improvement Initiatives Lead initiatives to improve process efficiency, reduce powder usage, and minimize waste. Utilize Lean, Six Sigma, and other continuous improvement methodologies to identify and address process bottlenecks. Conduct regular process audits and implement action plans to achieve ongoing improvements.
7. Safety and Environmental Compliance Ensure powder coating operations comply with environmental regulations, such as VOC emissions and waste disposal. Implement safety protocols to prevent hazards like dust explosions and chemical exposure. Train team members on proper handling and usage of powder coating materials and equipment.
8. Project Management and Coordination Manage powder coating projects, such as new product lines, equipment installations, or process upgrades. Coordinate with departments such as R&D, production, and quality to align process capabilities with business needs. Develop project timelines, resource plans, and budgets to ensure project objectives are met.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Industrial Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum of 2-5 years in powder coating or a similar surface finishing process.
- Familiarity with powder coating equipment and materials, process control, and quality standards.
