Job Description

According to the QS Rankings 2024, the NUS Department of History is ranked 11th among university history departments worldwide, and 1st in Asia. It is one of fifteen Departments, a Program, and a Language Centre within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, and Southeast Asia and East Asia are areas of special strength for the Department, which consists of more than thirty faculty members with research interests in various aspects of Asian, European, and U.S. history, as well as business, environmental, international, legal, maritime, military, and religious history, and science and technology studies.


The Department of History at the National University of Singapore (NUS) invites applications for a part-time lecturer to teach HY5415 Theatres of Memory: Performing Public History in Semester 2, AY2024/25. Applicants should have relative teaching experience with history background. Candidates for the position must demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching.


Course description of HY5415 Theatres of Memory: Performing Public History

This course surveys how societies gain new understandings of the past through performances in the public sphere. A broad spectrum of performances across various cultural contexts will be explored, including theatre and dance, historical re-enactments, public rituals, immersive exhibitions, films, and digital sites such as video games and social media. This course equips students with a toolkit with which to interpret, analyse, and reflect on the dramaturgical strategies and techniques that shape the stories told in these performances, examining how they enhance historical consciousness and negotiate the distance between past and present for the communities involved.
