Job Description
The Tropical Marine Science Institute, National University of Singapore invites applications for the position of Research Assistant for the research project Marine Environment Sensing Network (MESN; see https://ombak.mesn.sg/).
The MESN project aims to establish operational marine monitoring capabilities for research and monitoring of climate change and other emerging threats to Singapore’s marine environment. MESN also aims to foster development of marine technologies and support marine science R&D efforts.
Key responsibilities:
• Maintaining the operations of a suite of environmental sensors on the MESN buoys
• Curate environmental data from the MESN buoys and other marine monitoring efforts
• Plan and conduct fieldwork to retrieve/deploy sensors and maintain the MESN buoys
• Assist in the curating of web content on the MESN data platform and website
• Work closely with multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers
• Perform relevant desk scientific research to a specific brief where required
• Assist with data collection, data analysis, and preparing research results for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals
• Assist in various administrative duties as part of project management
Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree or higher (preferably with environmental science or engineering background)
• Familiar with water quality measurements and marine environment data
• Must be physically fit and able to work in the field and on boats
• Should be able to multitask and manage tight timelines
• Independent and self-motivated, and organised with attention to detail
• Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, that are essential for communication of findings in scientific and other media
• Team player able to work closely with a multidisciplinary project team including engineers and IT specialists
• Preferably able to SCUBA dive, with PADI Rescue level (or equivalent) and above certification
• Preferably familiar with Singapore’s marine environment
