The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Associate on a 7-month contract (with option to renew contract) at the Asian Languages & Cultures (ALC) department.


Project Title: Research Study of the Effectiveness of Malay Language Learning and Promotion Committee (MLLPC) and Tamil Language Learning and Promotion Committee (TLLPC) Programmes


Project Introduction: This is a research project involving NIE as the contracted research body and Malay Language & Tamil Language Community Development Program /MOE as the organizing entities.

The project entails a program valuation study using an adapted Logic Model approach. Primarily qualitative with a small quantitative component, the project examines selected MLLPC and TLLPC core programs over a 5 or 10-year period. It involves conducting interviews with selected individuals or groups who have participated in the core programs/activities. The target groups are secondary/post-secondary students learning Malay Language, teachers, parents, and the general public.


Requirements:

  • Master’s degree with relevant experience.
  • Possess relevant experience in research. Experience in projects involving medium to large-scale data collection preferred.
  • Ability to speak fluent Malay as the research associate will be required to handle Malay texts and liaise largely with Malay-speaking research participants.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and lead a team effectively
  • Possess good verbal and written communication skills
  • Possess good project management and interpersonal skills
  • Expertise in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment
  • Proactive, willing to learn, reliable and able to manage concurrent tasks in a timely manner
  • Expertise in quantitative methodologies and analyses and proficiency in statistical analyses software (i.e., SPSS, Qualtrics, and/or Mplus) an advantage
  • Expertise in data processing and management an advantage
  • Record of strong scientific writing skills and published papers an advantage

Responsibilities:

  • Liaise with participating organisations/schools/parents/teachers/ students and research team to manage and coordinate the logistics of project implementation (e.g., scheduling data collection, manpower, and administration procedures)
  • Supervise and oversee junior research associates and research assistants
  • Manage project data and document up-to-date project records
  • Prepare reports and presentations with minimal supervision
  • Conduct literature searches and reviews
  • Perform data analysis
  • Making purchases and claiming for expenses
  • Assist in planning and executing tasks to achieve project deliverables
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Principal Investigator / Co-PIs
