Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for Research Associate (Data Scientist / Artificial Intelligence Specialist) in the Department of Biochemistry, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Specifically, utilising data science approaches involving machine learning and artificial intelligence, A/Prof Gruber’s team focuses on the development and validation of biological ageing clocks for clinical translation and application, as well as for drug discovery in model organisms. Appointments will be made on a two-year contract basis, in the first instance, with the possibility of extension.

Purpose of the post

The successful candidate should have a strong background in advanced machine learning, artificial intelligence, and bioinformatics techniques with practical applications to biological / -omics data. Specifically, he or she will be responsible for data analysis and for developing advanced computational models, algorithms, and tools to analyse and interpret complex biological datasets derived from multi-omics data. The ideal candidate will combine a strong understanding of advanced statistical, and state-of-the-art artificial intelligence and machine learning methods, as well as expertise in programming languages such as R and/or Python with training in biology, biochemistry or a related discipline.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Research Associate will work with other team members to develop and validate biological ageing clock algorithms, and will be accountable to the Principle Investigator (PI). The Research Associate will be able to:

  1. Develop and apply computational models, algorithms, and tools to analyse and interpret large-scale biological datasets (e.g. clinical, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics);
  2. Collaborate with experimental biologists to design and analyse experiments, and interpret results;
  3. Stay up-to-date on new computational methods and tools, and apply them to ongoing research projects;
  4. Communicate research findings through publications, presentations, and reports;
  5. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate computational biology approaches with other disciplines (e.g. clinical medicine).

Qualifications

The applicant should:

  • Have a Master’s degree or equivalent in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Bioengineering and/or Biology;
  • Strong programming skills in relevant languages such as R and/or Python;
  • Experience with biological data analysis and interpretation;
  • Knowledge of biological systems and processes;
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills;
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently.
