About the Role
You will be part of The Straits Times Visualisation team that drives and implements an audience-first strategy in the newsroom, finding innovative ways to showcase and amplify content to various audiences across different platforms.
As a Deputy to Interactive Graphics Editor, you will lead the digital graphics design team to consistently deliver creative editorial projects across multiple platforms of The Straits Times. You will be responsible for generating ideas to create graphics, conduct research, identify relationships and trends in data.
The candidate will collaborate with the newsroom to drive more visual and interactive storytelling, manage and produce interactive graphics and identify appropriate stories and topics for daily graphics and long-term projects.
Responsibilities
- Write, design and help the team's developers build visual stories for the newsroom, including data visualisations and a wide variety of visual formats for storytelling.
- Carry out investigative journalism/research with journalists using data, including finding/verifying data sources.
- Use various statistics and data science tools for data parsing, scraping and wrangling. Access APIs or external data sources where necessary.
- Manage workflow and process for data-driven and visual stories in the newsroom
- Use analytics to evaluate stories and propose changes to workflow, concepts
- Represent the Graphics department at news meetings
- Oversee and art direct a staff of designers, developers
- Work with social media team to promote graphics
- Organise schedules and information for each project, ensuring that artwork delivery deadlines
Job Requirement
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, graphic design, data science, statistics or computer science
- Prior experience in the media industry would be advantageous
- Comfortable in either two or more of the following: journalism and/or reporting; data visualisation and/or infographics design; front-end web development; or data analysis programming.
- Experience working with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript including one frontend framework (React, VueJS, Svelte) is essential.
- Experience building interactive graphics using libraries such as d3.js and Mapbox. Experience with serverless computing (AWS) is an advantage
- Experience with one or more common databases, SQL, scripting languages (R, Python, Perl) is preferred.
- Familiar with the latest digital storytelling, data journalism and visual trends.
- Strong knowledge of interaction design, layout, colour and typography.
- A team player, willing to share and support other team members
- Attention to details, and demonstrate strong analytical and critical thinking skills
- Able to work on a flexible schedule, that may include nights, or weekends
