Art and Design Technology Technician

The role of the Art & Design Technician is a key role within the Expressive Arts department and the wider community. Working alongside the teaching team, the technician will ensure that all students have the best possible experience in Visual Art and Design Technology, providing robust support for teaching and learning and curriculum delivery.

This role exists to support the smooth running of the Art and Design Technology classrooms, prep rooms and stores to support teaching and learning in the classroom. The technician role offers challenge and requires initiative alongside responsibility. The DCIS Art and Design Technician will be responsible for four specialist teaching spaces in the secondary school. This will involve preparing resources, equipment, and teaching materials for lessons, clearing up after lessons, managing and maintaining good order in the prep rooms, overseeing equipment, and maintaining stock levels of consumable materials. There is also a requirement to support school events relating to the faculty, including exhibitions, and performing arts productions and concerts.


Core Requirements of the Post

In fulfilling the requirements of the post, the art and design technology technician will aspire to the highest standards of professionalism and will, in particular:

▪ Support teaching staff by selecting and managing suitable materials to help promote Art and DT as a practical subject at KS3, IGCSE and IB level and in line with health and safety guidance.

▪ Manage the availability of, prepare and provide resources, equipment and other teaching materials as requested by the faculty teachers. The faculty uses a range of mixed media including wood, plastics, metals, fabric, print and paint. Experience with these materials and machinery related is desirable.

▪ Organise and manage the use of resources and materials, including the preparation of the material for lessons and safely disposing of waste following lessons.

▪ Managing H&S systems within each classroom and work with the Head of Art and Design technology to resolve any concerns, ensuring all safety protocols are followed.

Coordinate the procurement of materials / equipment alongside the Head of Art and Design Technology, and repair / replace / increase stock levels to accommodate changes in cohorts and curriculums.


Areas of Responsibility and Key Tasks

  • Advise teaching staff on suitable materials to help promote subjects at KS3, IGCSE and IB level and in line with CLEAPPS guidance.
  • Adhere to NAE and IGCSE/IBO/CIS/WASC specifications and requirements.
  • Manage the availability and preparation of resources and equipment for lessons including but not limited to making exemplars and demos, prepping woodwork, kiln loading, 3D printing and laser cutting.
  • Operate an up to date, online system of monitoring the availability of materials, resources and equipment.
  • Manage the annual safety checking of equipment required.
  • Support with reprographics and ICT
  • To assist with the documentation of students work for submissions and exhibition.
  • To understand and explain the use of new equipment and advise how it could be used in schemes of work.

Prepare and manage faculty spaces to aid teaching and learning.

  • Keep storage areas clean and well organized, as well as sinks and worktops.
  • Dispose of waste, recycle and reuse materials appropriately, heavy lifting sometimes required.
  • Report any defects and damage to equipment to line manager and to arrange repair/service by the appropriate body when not in line with H&S guidelines.
  • Support with mounting and displaying of students work around the school.


Procurement

  • Update records maintaining an up- to- date inventory of equipment, materials, resources and their locations
  • Order materials as requested, liaising with procurement department.
  • Organize and check order deliveries. Inform the Head of Art and Design Technology if any equipment is faulty or materials are missing and follow up as directed.
  • Distribute new stock and resources appropriately as instructed.
  • Maintain a supplier database.
  • Keep equipment and daily perishables clean, organized and well maintained.
  • Review equipment needs within the department and advise on the purchase of new and replacement equipment.

Technical Support in Lessons

▪ Assist teachers, as requested, to facilitate student learning with respect to specific outcomes.

▪ Advise staff and visiting teachers about resources and equipment available.

▪ Advise teachers of activities that may support targeted learning outcomes.

Professional Responsibilities

▪ Support the life of the school beyond the classroom. Carry out additional reasonable duties as request by Line Managers or the Senior Leadership Team.

▪ Lead or support one or more afterschool co-curricular activities.

▪ Participate in day and residential weeks and other trips as required.

▪ Contribute to whole school learning initiatives duringthe term.

▪ Attend professional learning opportunities as directed.

▪ Up to date with the latest trends, technologies, and techniques in your specific skill base.

▪ Able to assist students as needed both academically and during practical activities.

▪ Able to support enrichment activities such as field trips and after school programmes (Trips and exhibition set up may occasionally go outside of school hours).
