Research Fellow (Steel Metallurgy)

The School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) provides a vibrant and nurturing environment for staff and students to carry out inter-disciplinary research in key areas such as Computational Materials Science, Characterisation Materials Science, Defence Composite Materials, Functional Composite Materials, Energy, Nanomaterials, Low Dimensional Materials, Biomaterials Materials, Biological Materials, Bioinspired Materials and Sustainable Materials.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate to join us as a research fellow to facilitate the research program in the development of next generation steels funded by Singapore National Research Foundation led by Nanyang Assistant Professor Yi-sheng (Eason) Chen.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the delivery of project goals
  • Conduct high-quality research and disseminate outcomes in peer-reviewed journals and academic conferences
  • Participate in supervising undergraduate and postgraduate researchers
  • Collaborate with local/overseas research groups
  • Establish one or more independent research programmes under the guidance of PI and other senior mentors
  • Develop competitive funding proposals in collaboration with PI and other senior colleagues
  • Engage in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses and contribute to curriculum development and pedagogical innovation
  • Contribute to the development of international and local research communities
  • Support the operation of PI's research group, including recuitment and external engagement
  • Engage in developing and mainting a safe and inclusive work environment

Job Requirements:

  • PhD in Materials Science or related fields
  • Excellent proven skills in the fields of physical metallurgy and materials characterization
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to transmit research results into published research outcomes.
  • Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following techniques: transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), transmission Kikuchi diffraction (TKD), atom probe tomography, and associated sample preparation techniques including focused ion beam (FIB).
  • Ability to work independently and to communicate effectively with team members
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure to meet research deadlines
  • Ability to work collaboratively with academic and industry partners
  • Sound working knowledge and acute awareness of safety regulations and operating procedures within the laboratory environment.
