Public Relations Specialist (Sports)
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Public Relations Specialist to lead and enhance our public relations efforts in the sports industry. The successful candidate will drive media strategies, build and maintain key relationships, and manage the image of athletes, sports teams, or brands across various media platforms. This role requires a strategic thinker with strong communication skills, sports industry knowledge, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities and Duties
• Build and maintain relationships with sports journalists, media outlets, influencers and key industry contacts. Pitch stories, secure coverage and organise press conferences, interviews and media appearances.
• Develop and execute PR strategies and campaigns to enhance brand visibility, maintain positive public perception, and build brand equity. Identify and implement new PR tactics to reach target audiences.
• Act as a spokesperson and manage responses to PR crisis or media inquiries. Develop and implement crisis management plans, working with internal stakeholders to ensure clear and accurate messaging.
• Collaborate with social media teams to amplify PR efforts through digital channels. Craft press releases, media kits, newsletters and other PR materials, ensuring all content aligns with brand values and goals.
• Organise and promote sports events, media days, sponsorship activities, and community events to foster relationships with fans, sponsors and media.
• Manage relationships with athletes, influencers, and brand ambassadors, ensuring alignment on brand image and messaging across appearances, events and endorsements.
• Track and analyse the success of PR campaigns, media coverage, and social sentiments, preparing detailed reports and recommendations for future initiatives.
Qualifications/Skills
• A minimum of 3-5 years of direct experience in PR, preferably in sports or a related industry.
• Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, Sports Management, or a related field.
• Excellent verbal communication skills; effectively communicate with internal stakeholders at all organisational levels, vendors, and team members.
• Proficiency with media monitoring and reporting tools.
• Strong network of media contacts within the sports or a related industry.
• Experience with project management and adaptability: Ability to re-prioritize while working in a fast-paced environment, while maintaining attention to detail, establishing priorities, and meeting deadlines.
• Positive, hardworking and self-motivated person.
• Experience in crisis communication and reputation management
• Familiarity with sports marketing, sponsorship, and branding.
