Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the entire legal function, providing strategic direction, oversight, and support to the legal team.
- Provide expert legal advice to the Board, CEO, and senior leadership on corporate governance, regulatory compliance, and business strategy.
- Ensure the company complies with local laws, including the Companies Act, and relevant industry-specific regulations.
- Identify and manage legal risks across business operations and transactions, overseeing their mitigation at a strategic level.
- Lead the negotiation and review of major commercial contracts, such as vendor agreements, joint ventures, and licensing agreements, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
- Oversee litigation, dispute resolution, and external legal counsel, providing high-level guidance and ensuring that litigation strategies minimize risk and cost.
- Provide strategic legal support during mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, and other strategic transactions, coordinating with internal and external parties.
- Advise on employment law matters, employee relations, terminations, workplace policies, and compliance with the Employment Act, while overseeing the work of specialized employment counsel.
- Oversee the management and protection of the company’s intellectual property portfolio, including trademarks, patents, copyrights, and trade secrets.
- Lead the development of internal legal policies and training programs to ensure company-wide compliance with legal and regulatory obligations.
- Build and manage a high-performing legal team, providing leadership, mentorship, and professional development to in-house counsel and support staff.
- Collaborate closely with other departments (e.g., HR, Compliance, Finance) to integrate legal considerations into broader company strategy and operations.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in laws from a recognized law school. Postgraduate qualifications in Master of Laws is a plus.
- Minimum of 8 years of legal experience, with at least 5 years in a senior legal role.
- Expertise in corporate law, contract law, regulatory compliance, and dispute resolution in the local market.
- Strong leadership and communication skills.
- Strategic thinker with excellent problem-solving and negotiation abilities.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with senior management and the Board.
