Job Description – Secondary School Teacher

Reporting directly to: Head of Department

Position description: The teacher is responsible for delivering Cambridge Lower Secondary/Cambridge IGCSE/IBDP curriculum for various Grade levels as assigned by the Principal and timetabled by the school. He/she works as part of a curriculum team to provide effective teaching and learning programmes focused on improving student engagement and achievement in one or more Learning Areas.

The teacher actively promotes and reinforces the NPSI Vision and Mission and exhibits professional responsibility at all times. He/she is familiar with NPSI policies and procedures, is a positive and professional role model, an expert in their subject area and contributes to the positive reputation of the school through their professional relationships with students, parents and the wider community.


Responsibilities:

Teaching:

  • Prepare the annual programme of work based on the curriculum and scheme of work provided.
  • Prepare the curriculum plan and table of assessments.
  • Take account of students’ entry levels and use them to plan lessons.
  • Write lesson plans at least 2 weeks in advance and get them approved by the HOD.
  • Maintain good discipline by following the school’s discipline policies and procedures.
  • Establish a purposeful learning atmosphere during all lessons.
  • Promote and develop a collaborative, inclusive and supportive learning environment.
  • Prepare appropriate and challenging homework tasks, get them approved by the HOD and upload them on the Firefly learning platform as per school policy.
  • Identify suitable resources and activities, get them approved by HOD and publish them on Firefly.
  • Identify and work appropriately with special educational needs students and gifted and talented students in conjunction with the HoD, SLT and Guidance Counsellor.
  • Complete Teacher Unit Reflection and Student Unit Reflection on time, identifying AFIs and CAPs and sharing the information with co-teachers and HOD.
  • Conduct remedial classes to support underperforming students.
  • Ensure the health and safety of all learners at all times.
  • Arrive on time for lessons and never leave students unattended.

Assessment, Recording and Reporting and General Administration:

  • Keep appropriate records of all student’s work.
  • Promptly mark and return the work set.
  • Provide appropriate and timely feedback to students on their work.
  • Prepare question papers, marking scheme and blueprint for tests and examinations as per the requirement of the course and policies and procedures of the school.
  • Adhere to school’s marking and moderation policies at all times.
  • Analyse and appropriately use assessment information, which has been gathered from UTs and Summative assessments, to identify AFIs and CAPs to improve learner outcomes.
  • Write school reports in line with school’s policy.
  • Attend parent-teacher conferences and keep parents informed about their child’s performance and future targets.
  • Report underperforming students to HOD.
  • Undertake invigilation/supervision/proxy duties as requested by the school.
  • Research, suggest, source appropriate resources for the department.
  • Set high expectations and promote self-reflection for improving the achievement of all students.
  • Scrupulously practice academic honesty and require academic honesty from all students.

Extracurricular Activities

  • Support school activities as requested by the SLT.
  • Participate and contribute to the extra-curricular programme at NPSI.
  • Carry out supervision or other duties that help maintain a safe and orderly environment.
  • Develop and host competitions and other events relevant to the subject.

Pastoral care:

  • Monitor students’ social and emotional needs and support them if required as per school policy and procedures.
  • Seek help from HOD, SLT members to address pastoral care needs of students.
  • Endeavour to build up a good relationship with the students, so that they will look to you for support and advice.
  • Report issues of concern to HOD/SLT.
  • Maintain accurate student attendance records.

Performance management and professional development:

  • Lesson observation will be conducted regularly and timely feedback will be provided.
  • There is a mid-term and end of year performance appraisal to assess the performance of the teacher.
  • The school will support the continuing professional development of the teacher to ensure that the teacher’s expertise is being kept up to date with the latest pedagogical trends.
  • The teacher shall represent NPSI in the best possible light through respectful and professional actions on and off campus
  • The teacher shall adhere to the terms and conditions of employment at the school and observe the terms of the employee handbook and policies and procedures of the school.
  • The teacher shall be cordial in relationships with colleagues and helpful when the school requires help.
  • The teacher shall be committed to lifelong learning, open to new ideas, and willing to take up professional development courses and undergo professional mentoring and coaching.
