Veterinary Rotating Intern

Beecroft Animal Specialist Services Pte. Ltd.

Specialities To be Rotated Across a 1 Year Rotation:

  • Emergency & Critical Care
  • Internal Medicine
  • Neurology
  • Surgery
  • Exotics

1. Emergency & Critical Care (8 Weeks)

  • Core Skills:
    • Assessment and management of acute emergencies patients.
    • Stabilization of emergencies e.g. trauma, cardiac, and respiratory emergencies.
    • Interpretation of emergency diagnostic tests (e.g., ultrasounds, blood tests).
    • Experience with procedures like central lines, ultrasounds, tube placement (oesophageal, nasal etc)
    • Responsibilities:
    • Triage and manage emergency cases under supervision.
    • Participate in resuscitations.
    • In-patient hospital care
    • Multidisciplinary collaboration with other departments.

2. Internal Medicine (8 Weeks)

  • Core Skills:
    • In-depth history taking, physical examination, diagnosis and work-ups.
    • Management of both acute and chronic internal medicine conditions e.g. diabetes, respiratory diseases etc.
    • Interpretation of lab results and imaging modalities (X-rays, Ultrasound, etc.).
    • Exposure to inpatient care and outpatient clinics.
    • Working with multidisciplinary, cross-departmental teams.
  • Responsibilities:
    • Admission and management of patients.
    • Daily rounds with other department veterinarians, interns, residents and specialists.
    • Discharge planning and follow-ups.

3. Neurology (8 Weeks)

  • Core Skills:
    • Perform comprehensive neurological examination.
    • Assessment and management of neurological cases.
    • Interpretation of suitable diagnostic tests (e.g. basic MRI interpretation, CT, X-Rays).
    • Assisting in spinal and brain surgeries.
    • Providing client communication on diagnosis and treatment plans.
  • Responsibilities:
    • Manage neurology cases under supervision.
    • Manage neurological emergencies.
    • Participate and assist in neurological surgeries.
    • Provide In-patient hospital care
    • Multidisciplinary collaboration with other departments.

4. Surgery (8 Weeks)

  • Core Skills:
    • Pre-operative and post-operative care.
    • Basic surgical procedures (wound care, suturing, incision, and drainage).
    • Assisting in both soft tissue and orthopaedic surgeries.
    • Management of surgical emergencies.
  • Responsibilities:
    • Admission and management of patients.
    • Attend surgical rounds.
    • Attend daily hospital rounds with other department veterinarians, interns, residents and specialists.
    • Discharge planning and follow-ups.
    • Post-op inpatient care.

5. Exotics Companion Animal (8 Weeks)

  • Core Skills:
    • In-depth history taking, physical examination, diagnosis and work-ups.
    • Management & treatment of both acute and chronic medical conditions in exotic species.
    • Interpretation of lab results and imaging modalities (X-rays, Ultrasound, etc.).
    • Gain hands-on experience with assisting and performing surgical procedures.
    • Provide inpatient care to exotic patients.
    • Handle and stabilize emergency exotic patients.
  • Responsibilities:
    • Manage exotic clinical cases under supervision.
    • Manage exotic emergencies.
    • Participate and assist in surgeries.
    • Provide In-patient hospital care

6. Elective Rotation (8 Weeks)

  • Options:
    • Choose one of the above 5 specialties to focus on.

7. Evaluation & Feedback (Throughout the Internship)

  • Methods:
    • Regular evaluations by supervising specialists after each rotation.
    • Mid-rotation and end-of-rotation feedback sessions.
    • Case-based discussions and journal club sessions.
    • Evaluation of clinical skills, professionalism, communication, and teamwork.

8. Training Resources:

  • Clinical Guidelines & Protocols: Access to hospital-approved protocols.
  • Mentorship: Assigned mentor/supervisor for each rotation.
  • Conferences & Workshops: Attend hospital-organized educational activities.
