Contracts Manager Job Description
The Contracts Manager is responsible for managing the review, negotiation, drafting, execution, and maintenance of all contracts within the organization. This role supports the development of strategic partnerships by advising on legal considerations and fostering strong client relationships. The Contracts Manager ensures compliance with company policies, industry standards, and legal requirements while mitigating risks. This position involves close collaboration with project teams, clients, subcontractors, and suppliers to deliver marine construction projects on time and within budget. Additionally, the Contracts Manager safeguards the organization’s interests, enhances business engagements, and conducts periodic contract performance reviews.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Contributions:
- Support senior management in formulating business strategies.
- Establish and maintain strong client relationships by proposing effective partnership engagement models with a focus on legal considerations for strategic collaborations.
Contracts Administration:
- Manage the Contracts Department across all aspects of pre- and post-contract administration, as well as pre- and post-tender procurement activities.
- Supervise cost planning and tender submission processes.
- Oversee invitation, negotiation, evaluation, recommendation, and confirmation of quotations.
Contract Management:
- Collaborate with stakeholders to draft, review, negotiate, and implement contracts for marine construction projects, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and alignment with organizational goals.
- Analyze contractual obligations, payment terms, deliverables, and associated risks to secure favorable outcomes.
- Identify and mitigate potential risks related to contracts and projects.
- Monitor project budgets and expenditures to ensure alignment with contract terms while identifying opportunities for cost optimization.
Claims and Legal Advisory:
- Evaluate monthly progress claims and subcontractor payment claims.
- Attend client and project site meetings to address project and cost matters, including variation orders.
- Draft and issue contractual correspondence, including claims for extensions of time.
- Provide legal advice and support, including contract drafting, negotiation, and administration.
- Collaborate with internal and external legal teams for dispute resolution.
Reporting and Compliance:
- Maintain comprehensive records of contract-related activities.
- Prepare and present regular reports on contract status, risks, and issues to senior management.
- Conduct periodic evaluations to assess contract performance and recommend improvements for value optimization.
Team Collaboration:
- Work closely with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure compliance with contract terms and achievement of project milestones.
This position requires a detail-oriented professional with strong negotiation skills, legal acumen, and the ability to work collaboratively across teams. The Contracts Manager plays a critical role in protecting the organization’s interests and driving the successful execution of projects.
Requirements:
- A bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field.
- 8–10 years of experience in contract management within the construction industry, including exposure to large-scale projects.
- Strong legal knowledge and practical experience with contracts are highly desirable.
- Demonstrates a high level of professionalism, integrity, and ethical conduct, with the ability to handle confidential and sensitive information while adhering to ethical standards to build trust and credibility.
- Excellent negotiation, communication, and organizational skills, with proficiency in contract management software and tools.
- Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills to assess complex contract terms, identify potential risks, and develop effective mitigation strategies.
- Exceptional attention to detail for accurately reviewing, drafting, and managing contracts, with the ability to identify inconsistencies, errors, or potential issues to uphold contract integrity.
- Proven ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and efficiently manage contract-related workflows.
- Comprehensive understanding of marine construction processes, industry standards, and relevant regulatory requirements, including contract law and legal principles.
