Job Description
The Experimental Marine Ecology Laboratory (EMEL) within the Department of Biological Sciences at the National University of Singapore is seeking to appoint a Research Assistant to work on a major new project “Maximizing the beneficial environmental effects of tropical hybrid shorelines (MaxBETH)”. This interdisciplinary research aims to determine how hybrid coastal protection systems can be implemented at large scales in Singapore as well as assessing the challenges and benefits of up-scaling and identifying the effects of hybrid shorelines on biophysical processes.
The main responsibilities of the position include:
- Assist in administrative work to support the project
- Carry out intertidal and subtidal biodiversity surveys
- Coordinate with sister projects
- Prepare research manuscripts, reports, and presentations
Qualifications
Applicants should have completed a Masters degree or equivalent in biology, marine biology, ecology, geography, environmental studies, or other similar discipline. We may also consider applicants with Segrees in Engineering, Architecture, or Landscape Design. The candidates should have a strong passion for marine-related research. Research skills including species identification, statistical analysis, writing abilities, as well as the capacity to work within a diverse group of ecologists and marine scientists, are desirable. Candidates with previous first-authored ecological publications will be given priority.
Hold a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in biology, marine biology, ecology, geography, environmental studies, or other similar discipline. We may also consider applicants with degrees in engineering, architecture, or landscape design.
Skills
- Experimental design and analysis (including expertise in R)
- Strong taxonomic and identification abilities
- Strong written and interpersonal communication skills
- Excellent time and resource management
Experience
- At least three years’ experience in a related field
- Ability to conduct experimental work in field, lab, and aquaria
- Familiarity with nature-based solutions/ecological engineering
- Evidence of published research would be preferred
