Job Summary:
The Process Safety Engineer is responsible for ensuring that all processes within the facility comply with safety regulations and standards. This role involves identifying, evaluating, and mitigating risks associated with hazardous processes to protect personnel, assets, and the environment. The engineer works closely with multidisciplinary teams to implement safety systems, conduct hazard analyses, and ensure compliance with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Process Safety Management (PSM):Develop, implement, and maintain the facility’s PSM program in line with local and international standards (e.g., OSHA PSM, API, IEC 61511).
Perform regular audits and reviews of safety management systems.
- Risk Assessment and Hazard Analysis:Conduct and facilitate risk assessments such as HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, and SIL assessments.
Analyze process safety incidents and near misses to identify root causes and corrective actions.
Implement and maintain risk control measures.
- Safety Design and Systems:Ensure the design and operation of safety-critical equipment meet safety requirements.
Specify, evaluate, and test safety instrumented systems (SIS) and emergency shutdown systems (ESD).
Provide input on process design reviews to ensure inherent safety principles are applied.
- Compliance and Standards:Ensure compliance with applicable safety standards, codes, and regulations.
Prepare and submit required safety documentation and reports to regulatory bodies.
Liaise with government agencies, certification bodies, and auditors as needed.
- Emergency Response Planning:Support the development of emergency response plans and procedures.
Conduct process safety drills and training sessions for staff.
- Training and Development:Provide training to operations and maintenance personnel on process safety concepts and best practices.
Promote a strong safety culture within the organization.
- Incident Investigation:Lead or support investigations into process-related incidents.
Develop and implement corrective and preventive actions to mitigate future risks.
- Collaboration and Communication:Work closely with operations, maintenance, engineering, and project teams to ensure process safety is integrated into all activities.
Provide technical guidance on process safety issues.
Key Requirements:
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Advanced certifications in process safety (e.g., CCPS Process Safety Professional Certification, NEBOSH Process Safety Management) are a plus.
Experience:
- Minimum 10 years of experience in process safety engineering within the oil and gas industry, ideally with FPSO, refinery, or petrochemical exposure.
- Proven track record of implementing process safety programs and conducting risk assessments.
Technical Skills:
- Strong knowledge of process safety management frameworks and standards (e.g., OSHA PSM, API, IEC 61508/61511).
- Proficiency in process hazard analysis tools such as PHAST, PHA-Pro, or BowTie XP.
- Familiarity with safety design concepts, such as flare systems, relief valves, and blowdown systems.
- Understanding of fire and gas detection systems, ESD, and SIL verification.
Soft Skills:
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for cross-functional collaboration.
- Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
Preferred:
- Experience working on offshore or FPSO projects.
- Familiarity with environmental regulations and sustainability practices in the oil and gas sector.
